Can I do the Prerequisites Online?

  1. Hello All,

I was just about to try to enter nursing school and found out that I was pregnant which will defer my entry for a bit. What I was wondering is since I am not enrolled in a formal facility can I take the Prerequistes, (algebra, chemistry, science) online and get credit for the courses.

Please help, I'm having my 3rd child and and 41 and don't want to waste any more time. But right now I can't see enrolling or testing for enrollment without at least some refresher courses so that by the time i can go, I will be more than ready to ace the entrance exams.

I hope this makes sense. As you can see I'm losing it as we speak.

Thanks everyone I appreciate your input.

I do not think taking your science classes online is a good idea,as these classes have a lab component to them.Careful you are taking the correct science classes with the required amount of credits.Perhaps you can take some other classes online, that are more suitable. You may be better served by talking to a student advisor in your school.

Definitely speak to your school. My program offered suggestions for some online classes.

There are classes that include an online "lab" portion but they might be looked down upon in some circles.

Whatever you do, be sure that the classes are from an accredited school. Otherwise, they may not transfer.

Can you not do night classes or weekend classes?

I found out I was pregnant the week after I registered for the fall (prereqs) last year. I ended up taking the year off. Mainly because I wasn't sure how I'd feel, and I ended up being pretty sick. And actually, right now I'm still not doing pre-reqs, I am taking an online literature class to keep my status at my community college. But I'm starting again in the spring and looking forward to it. The time has gone by really fast and I don't regret taking the time.

About online classes: they seem soooooo tempting. Imagine attending class in your pj's? But, trust me, they are not easier. If anything, because they require such a high level of commitment, dedictation, and discipline, they can be harder. And I can't imagine doing a science lab on the computer...it just wouldn't compare to the hands on experience.

On another note, I do know schools that offer hybrid courses. The lecture is all online and the lab is at school. See if any schools around you offer this option.

Enjoy your pregnancy and take it easy. Nursing school is not going anywhere. I know you feel anxious to get on with it but I am the voice of experience....

Check with the schools you plan to apply to to be sure tey will accept them. I did and they would accept them so I took A&P 1 and 2 through Edukan (both of which were great experiences) however I changed my mind about the first school and the school I'm applying to now will not accept them so I have to retake them.
