Applying to nursing school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi. I am a pre-nursing student at ole miss, and I am not sure if I should wait to apply to nursing school next fall or go ahead and apply this fall. The reason I am unsure is because I have a D in Chem 101 (intro to chemistry), which does not count toward the nursing major. I am going to take it over but it will not be before I apply to school. Will this affect my application? If anyone can give me some advice, it will be very helpful.

Good day, happeee:

In our geographic area, chemistry (at least the 100/101, intro level) does matter to get into a nursing program. If you are sure it is not a prerequisite, and your GPA isn't too terribly hit with it, you might be ok. Do you have an advisor at the school you are now at that can help you?

Thank you.

Yes I do. I am taking general chemistry 1 and 2 this summer, and those count because they have a lab. Intro chem doesn't have a lab which is why it doesn't count. It was only a pre-requisite for my particular school. I think my GPA will be fine by December, so I think I am going to go ahead and apply just to see. Thanks for your help!

I say apply. The worst that happens is they reject you, and you apply again next year. However, if you don't apply this year, you DEFINITELY won't get in. I would notate somewhere (and they will see on your transcript) that you are retaking the chem class. Is a D considered passing where you are? (It's not in CA)

Yes it is considered passing, but it feels like failing to me. However I still got the hours for it.

I went to Ole Miss, just graduated, Hotty Toddy! I'd be happy to help you out with anything you need.

Also if you're looking at UMMC as an option I can say with almost certainty they will not take that score... But there are a whole lot of schools that no longer require chemistry at all. But the rest of your prerequisite grades like nutrition, microbiology, stats, and A&P need to be A's or B's. Well in my opinion.

@dhart17 hotty toddy & congrats! Thanks alot I will definitely need help because I have already gotten off to a kinda bad start, but I've been whipped into shape these past two semesters so I'll be doing better from now on!
