Anyone attending Ivy Tech

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am attending Ivy Tech in Muncie, Indiana and am currently enrolled in nursing pre-req classes. My first idea was to get my lpn and then go back for my rn when my daughter starts school. But I have just realized that the the teas test for the rn program and the psb-pn test for the lpn program are given within two weeks of each of each other. I'd love to get into the rn program but will only have three of my pre-req classes done. Has anybody gotten straight in or is it even a possiblity since the classes add points to your score, I wasn't even sure that I'd have a chance! Any suggestions??? And does anybody have an study tips for the psb, my bookstore sells studyguides for the teas but not the psb.

Hello, I graduated from the LPN program from Ivy Tech of Fort Wayne last December. At my school, admission is based completely on the amount of points you have. The higher the points, the better your chances are of getting in. For instance at my school a TOTAL point score of about 200 gives you a good chance of getting in. The total points is your TEAS score plus your pre-req class points. I am currently back at IVY Tech of Fort Wayne for the R.N program. Because the next LPN to RN program begins in Summer 06, I'm taking my last two pre-reqs to get my more points before I take the TEAS in December. I currently have 90 points, lets say I get 2 Bs in these classes which would yield a total of about 48 points... plus 90 is 138, that means I could potentially get 62 (which is horrible!) on the test to come out to about 200 points. Do you see? If your school is based on points like mine, then the MORE points you have the better. So here is my recommendation. Take the TEAS or PSB whatever you're trying to do or both, that way you can get an idea of what the test is like and accumulate points. Apply for the program and then you will be put on the waiting list. Lets say you are 30th on the waiting list, as you do more pre-reqs you will get more points and jump higher on the list also improving your chances. Also, after completing your pre-reqs you may want to take the TEAS or PSB again to improve your score thus improving your points (because the tests actually test your knowledge in english, sciences, and math, completing your pre-requs will be beneficial). Do you see? Also, you may want to talk to the program chair of the R.N and/or LPN program to find out exactly how they do admission to the program. I'm sure they will be able to paint the best possible picture for you. In the mean time if you have any more questions.... I'm here.

I attended Ivy Tech in Lawrenceburg, talked to a ton of people about the nursing program, which ours is in Madison Indiana, and I STILL dont understand the criteria for the points system.....

Thanks for the info., that sounds like what I was expecting. I'm only going to have about 40 points from my pre-req classes when it comes time to take the teas. I think I'm going to take both of them anyway and see what happens. What is the total possible on the teas, do you know? And last I've heard the lpn program goes only by what you get on the test and not pre-req points, is that true? And any suggestions on studing for the psb? Thanks again, good luck in your program!

Hello again, thanks for the good luck :wink2: . Okay, unfortunately I don't know much about the TEAS because I haven't taken it yet. Sorry. But I know that the book store should offer studying material and a breakdown of the test. As far as the lpn program goes, your program may be completely based on the PSB, which would be good for you if you get a good score! We have so many applicants in Fort Wayne that they use pre-reqs now too. Contact your program chair to find out. I believe the PSB has 5 parts:

1) Vocab, arithmetic, form relationships

2) Spelling

3) Natural Sciences (chemistry, biology, health)

4) Clinical Judgement of a PN

5) Vocational Adjustment index

I think it's 180 questions.

I think that you said the bookstore doesn't have a PSB practice book for you so here is a website that can test you on everything you need to know:

http://www.testprepreview.com/nursing_practice.htm

I think it's a good idea for you to take both of them. That way you may get direct entry into the LPN program and maybe get on the waiting list for the R.N. program while you're finishing your pre-reqs. I guess it's the best of both worlds right? Well, good luck with whatever you decide to do. If you have anymore questions, let me know.
