Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi, I am a 37 year old mother of 4 kids, ranging from 3-10. I have a BA in Psychology and did complete all the sciences and pre-reqs for nursing as well as the 2 first nursing courses at RIC for the BSN program. I have been a stay at home mom for the past 10 years and have loved every minute. I have always wanted to be a nurse and am seriously considering reapplying to the nursing program. My youngest will go to school all day in 4 years and I would love to finish the program by then. Is it realistic to be a mom and survive the strains of nursing school? I would love to be a nurse and still be a dedicated mom.

I would love to hear any opinions or words of wisdom!!!!

It is not only realistic, but very common for Moms to be nursing students. You will need to have a reliable support system to step in and provide child care and/or deal with kid emergencies when you cannot do so.... nursing education academic schedule is very rigid and unforgiving.

I have been a SAHM for 9 years now. My son is now 8 and is in the second grade. I waited until he was in school full time to start up schooling again. It works for me because I start school after I drop him off at the bus and am done with classes in time to pick him up. I am a newly single mom and my son does competitive judo. I never miss a practice or tournament. I do my studying at the dojo while he practices at night and I study in a hotel on the weekends when we travel. It is definitely doable. I am hopefully starting the program in August. When I have clinicals my ex will pick him up and watch him for me. He owns his own business so he has a little more freedom to do that stuff. There are nights when I just put the books away so we can cuddle or take some time for us. Do not let school take over your life. I work very hard to maintain that balance. But my son is also old enough now to understand what his mommy is doing and he tells me all the time how proud he is of me.

Also, I am 38 so don't let age be a deterrent.
