Anatomy

I had signed up for A&P summer class, but it was way to fast paced for me. I just couldn't keep up no matter what I did. I tried everything. The instructor suggested taking them separately so I am taking anatomy during the fall semester. Do you all have suggestion on study tips? I have the atlas that goes with my new text book as well as a different one, I tried recording the lectures which I plan to keep doing, I did notes, pics, tried this site my instructor showed us with labeling exercises. Etc. I am not the type that catches on to stuff quickly (in school. At work I can learn super fast, which is weird) I am just wanting ideas to do better this semester.

I think all of what was said is previous comments is completely accurate...I was in an 8 week accelerated A&P as well, and I never did flash cards, I tried didn't work because there's so much info, you'll being doing flash cards forever with no time to actually study them.

My instructor gave us entire packets of notes & emailed power points for every chapter. What worked for me was just reading, reading, re reading, and reading more! Diagrams were the same, just memorization, knowing it in your sleep. I would dream about A&P.

The best thing to do is to dedicate this time to that class, and that class only. Especially since it's accelerated, you'll really need to dedicate the time to the material to comprehend it, which will be hard at times because every class period you'll be on to the next chapter, well at least in my class we had class 3 days a week, a chapter a day, test every single day, one day a lab exam, next day chapter exams, exams 3 days a week!

Just learn as much as you can, and you have to really indulge! Make it fun! You'll do great!

Great tips above, and like RyfutureRn, I spent so much time studying anatomy that I was dreaming about the different systems, good but somewhat annoying when one of the few nights that you end up seeing the boyfriend during the semester you find yourself half awake reviewing the cardiovascular system, lol.

One of the biggest things that will help you in any class is to figure out what methods you learn by best, writing, visual, auditory , hands on, I am sure that there are some others. Try to incorporate those methods in your studying, if you learn by hearing tape your lectures so that you can listen to them. I tend to learn best through writing and hands on, which lead me to writing my notes several times. Before we would even cover the info in class I would read through the material, after my first read through I would go through it again taking notes. After that I would use the lecture outline that my instructor had posted and I would fill that in on my own, and than I would fill in another during the class. Which meant I had written out the information at least 3 times, 4 if I made up note cards. It was a lot of time dedicated to the class, I did not know what free time was this summer, but for me it worked.

You might not need to go to this extreme, but understanding your learning style will help in guiding you how to oh about the information. You mentioned that you learn things at work, one of the things I would think about is how is it that new information or skills are learned at work, and try to figure ways that you could incorporate that into learning for your classes.

Hi Amber27,If you could take antaomy and physiology separately that's great. I did it that way due to my scheduling I took physiology because it had open seats and anatomy wasn't but anyways.. I strongly recommend recording lectures and hearing those lecture recordings the same day if you can and also going over your notes the day you had class. I am also not the most fastest learner either >.

If your professor posts outlines, PowerPoints, study guides, etc. on their site or on blackboard print those out if they are available before class and bring them to class. Read these while you have free time. You will do great!

I took it online and 2 A&P courses that were combined ie learn the anatomy of x while learning the physiology of it. I am really bad at memorization (have PTSD over the Krebs cycle) so I use a LOT of mnemonics. I sometimes wonder why they split the anatomy and physiology. It is easier, for me anyway, to learn the form and the function. It stays in my brain easier.

You have great suggestions above! Good luck!!!

Yes best advice..i studied EVERYWHERE I WENT even at walmart doing grocery shopping lol

If you google Khan Academy - for any topic really not just anatomy, he really explains everything in a way that isn't confusing. He draws everything out for you. It's really helpful for any topic you're struggling with. Check it out!

Thank you for all the suggestions! I am going to try all of them and see what works the best! I am hoping taking them separate isn't going to be a bad idea, I am taking evening classes again. I tend to be more productive at night so with class ending at 9 and I live closer to school now so I should have time to study after now. Only down side is starting in sept I will have to be up at 5am for work,

Crossing my fingers this semester goes way better! I get discouraged so easily!
