UH MEPN 2012

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Is anyone looking at University of Hawaii's MEPN program for Fall 2012? I'm originally from Honolulu and would LOVE to go back and do this program. Especially since I would pay in-state tuition! :)

I've looked over the lengthy forum about the program from 2009. Is there anyone who went to UH's program that started this Fall? I would be quite interested to hear your stats (GPA, etc.) and to find out how many people applied and how many were accepted/matriculated this year. I will also be taking A&P 2 and Microbiology in the Spring and I am curious if that will hurt me since I am not done with all the prereqs. They say you just have to finish them by July, but I am wondering if that is really true.

Any info previous MEPN people can give me would be great. Thanks!

Semester 1 schedule was the worst but it's because we didn't have teh awesome new SIM labd and had to do lab at a state hospital miles from the school and then drive to school for classes - by the time we got there all the parking was gone.

The schedule below does not include teh random extra things we often had to do like get computer certified for electronic records and site orientations.

Monday: 8:30-12:30 Lab (for the first few weeks we started at 7:30), Classes from 1:30-4:30

Tuesday: 1:30pm -8:00pm class with a 1 hour dinner break

Wed: health assessment clinical 4-5 hours

Th: 8:30-12:30 lab, 3-6 class

Friday: get patient infor and do precare for Sat - about 4 hours

Saturday: med-surge clinical 6:30-3:30

2nd semester more projects, more hours that need to be put in on your on time

Monday: 8:30-6 class

Tuesday: 2:30-10:00 pm mental health clinical

Wed. off but often visiting sites for projects

Th: 7:45-3:45 public health clinicals

Friday: get patient info and do precare - about 4 hours

Saturday: 6:30-3:30 med surge clinicals

the schedule changes, flexibility is a must - expect to put in about 40 hours a week face time with instructors and other students

To alleviate some concern - during clinicals we have often heard nurses remark that the MEPN students seem to have it more together than the BSN students and we have recieved very little resistance from anyone. Employment later may be a different story but I like to hope everyone is going to put some time in as an RN before going on to advance practice :)

Sorry posted long reply as a post instead of a reply but here are a couple of other thoughts

1: compared to seasoned workers of any type, all new grads ARE clueless lol - it's fine we will gain experience just like those nurses did on the job. They were once clueless too. In general "nurses eat thier young" so we all just have to get used to that mentality.

2: DE is new - people don't like new things - nursing eductaion has undergone several metamorphesis and each time there is initial resistance - we will show the nursing community that this works and has benefits just as nurses of new educational models have in the past.

If you find your passion and let it drive your life, others will become swept up in the momentum you create

*crickets* Lol! Where's the news?!

i have no idea. thinking about calling to ask if letters have been sent out yet and if not when they will be sent out. they're not messing around with the suspense of this thing.

No kidding, I am walking around with a huge pit in my stomach...nerves.

H.u.r.r.y. U.p. M.e.p.n. M.a.i.l!!!!

@NHMama maybe one of us should call! if you call please let us know :).

It truly is amazing to wait in suspense this long!

Best of luck to you all!!

On a positive note, surely we won't have to wait more than a couple more weeks??? :)

I'm sure there will be people accepted out of this group and that we will know notifications have gone out that way. I would say next week. No more than two! I like to think taking their time means their making really good choices... i.e me! haha ;)

@MissHolland, this site wouldn't let me private message you back. Said your box is full.I wonder if UH is on spring break this week?

I deleted them. Good now. Break is the week of the 26th.

With that I think it's fair to say we will hear by the end of next week. Wow!

Hi everyone...i'm new to this thread and i'm also fairly new to this site after registering. after reviewing everyone's blogs...i just want to say I am on the same boat...i applied to the MEPN program and i am trying to patiently wait to hear the news. how is everyone doing on the wait? as the end of March nears...it's starting to be more stressful than eager to hear the news :0( has anyone applied to other schools or knows of other schools with similar requirements?
