Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?

Hey just wondering if anyone is applying to UAB's MSN program. I'm applying to their FNP program, but still unsure as to whether or not i'm making the right decision about school choice. I'm specifically wondering about the time commitment. I work full-time and am wondering if I would still be able to keep my full-time job and do the distance learning format full-time as well. Also, cost is a major issue to me as my husband is racking up a gizzion dollars in dental school loans. Any info would be awesome.

I highly suggest taking patho before pharm. My schedule didn't work out this way and I took pharm first, but would have gotten a lot more out of it if I had had patho. Patho is a lot of work, so if you can take that by itself it would probably be a little better. Pharm, Role Development and Issues are all pretty easy as long as you do the work.

Hi all! I applied for fall of 2011....the wait is killing me, I have had my app. in since December......I have heard that over 500 apply (yikes!). I am currently bridging through UAB, I am hoping this gives me a leg up, but I haven't found anything about any kind of preference for current students. Good luck to everyone!

I am in undergrad bridge there and take classes on line. Its a great school - just stay organized early on. Check emails and DQ's frequently, and make sure your APA formatting is up to par! Good luck! I am sure you will do great!

I received an email from an admissions advisor for the ACNP program that indicated my chances for admission are smaller because I'm not a resident of Alabama and they give preference to in-state residents. This was after I informed her that I'm a RN with 7 yrs experience and graduating on the dean's list with my BSN this May. I was surprised to hear that because that tidbit of info is not listed on their website. Has anybody esle heard of this rule/guideline? Has anybody been accepted while out of state?

Thanks so much!!

I had wanted to apply to the FNP program, and was advised to apply for Adult NP for the same out of state reason. I have no real desire to see peds/ob, but also didn't want to close that door. I'm about to attempt a "change of concentration." Wish me luck.

My unsolicited advice to you is apply to the ACNP, and on the application where they ask your 2nd preference for program list something else. You can always turn it down if you really have your heart set on ACNP.

Every state funded school has to have a preference for state applicants, because they are the ones who pay the taxes that support the school. However, that doesn't mean they don't accept out of state students. I am out of state and got in and got the specialty track I wanted.

Thanks Annaiya and UMashtangi! I was quite discouraged about applying there. I'm starting to get quite anxious about applying to these programs. It is so competitive out here and I'm starting to wonder if these programs prefer alternate entry students or students who don't have nursing experience. I'm applying to several programs but I don't know what I'll do if I don't get into one. I'm wondering if I need to start applying to PA schools.

It is competitive, but so many people seem to have really low GPAs from nursing school. It isn't impossible to get in, but you need to have a solid application. RN experience is definitely considered. I haven't "met" anyone in my classes without some RN experience. If your GPA isn't that great, then take the GRE and get a stellar score. You just need to have things on your application that will rank you higher than the other people who've applied. I can't believe PA school is any easier to get in. Good luck!

I didn't realize that was the problem. Thankfully I finished my ADN program with a 3.5 GPA and I've been on the dean's list throughout my BSN completion program. I'm scheduled to take the GRE this month. That makes me nervous because I know just one person who has scored higher than 1000 on the GRE. I got my CCRN certification last year so I hope that helps my chances. I'm just really anxious because I really want to attend an excellent program.

BTW, good luck on your app Umashtangi!!

I'm the opposite with the GRE, I only know 1 person who scored lower than 1000, most everyone I know scored higher than that. Are you required to submit GRE scores? I had a 1270, but didn't submit the scores to UAB, because it was $40, and I didn't think I needed them to get in. After paying for 2 copies of transcripts from all of the schools I've went to, I figured I'd spent enough, lol. So if you aren't required to take the GRE, but want to, at least if you don't like your score you don't have to submit it then.

In terms of studying for the GRE, just make sure you understand the types of verbal questions they ask. I found trying to figure out exactly how the questions worked was the hardest part for that. And math is math, if you don't know it, you have to study it.

You sound like you have a strong application, so I hope you get in.:)

I was just curious to see if anyone who had applied for Fall 2011 with a deadline of May 1 has heard anything. I know that they say that decisions will be sent out within 30 days of the deadline....but just curious :)
