I have accepted a position at UPMC Shadyside. I was hoping maybe some of you could share some ideas on good places to live. We have to buy because we have quite a few animals. We are looking for something safe and affordable on a nurses pay. I would appreciate any info you could share. Thanks.

You may want to consider the northern or eastern suburbs.

Good luck to you! :)

I agree up in the northern suberbs you can buy a home with a little bit of land for a lot cheaper than you could elsewhere. Check out the North Hills area. (closer to Shadyside property is outrageously priced, and less space for your money)

Unless the DarkSide is paying six-figure salaries to it's RNs, you may have to look outside of Allegheny County for a home with any significant amount of property surrounding it. Butler, Armstrong, Westmoreland, and Beaver would be good bets if you are looking north or east of Pittsburgh (easier access to Shadyside by various routes). My daughter lives in Shadyside, not much room there, prices are high. Lots of animals, though. Lots of people walking dogs. Lots of "land mines" too.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

What about Spring Garden or Troy Hill?

Hi OneLoneNurse, I'm moving to Pittsburgh, and looked all over the region for quite some time. What type of environment do you like - urban or suburban? We just bought a house in Marshall Shadeland (moving from Philly, so we're likely a bit more comfortable with crime that most Pittsburghers, LOL). We looked at some houses in Spring Garden and Troy Hill, and didn't find the area to be too scary, but the lots can be small and that might not work with your animals. Where will you be working? We get a fair bit of snow and ice and the roads might be tricky...

Wow, thanks for replying to my posting! I have seriously thought about Spring Garden and Troy Hill, because I think I will be working at West Penn @ Allegheny Center. I will check out Marshall Shadeland.
