salary for peds office?

I'm trying to figure out what a fair salary would be if I were to accept a part time RN position in a busy pediatrician's office with 5 doctors in the suburbs of Chicago. I have 2 years of pediatric experience, but it was at a pediatric pulmonology office. Very specialized and relatively slow.

Job duties will include: telephone triage, vaccine administration and family teaching. I would still continue the 8 hours a week I have at an asthma/allergy office for the experience and great references along with the networking that could be invaluable to my future career.

So, thoughts on salary to negotiate in a town where most places pay "decently?"

I don't know what "pays decently" means. You would need to clarify. I would say, whatever RNs make with equivalent years of experience in the hospital, figure 80-90% of that.

It's tough to say. Pay varies from area to area in the country. I would say your pay would be about 75% of what you would get paid in the hospital. Why not use your pay that you receive from the Allergy office as a negotiating point??

Because I only get 14 an hour at the office. That number is beyond ridiculous. It is what my mom made from the same doctor 25 years ago. That family of doctors is notorious for paying extremely low. But I need the job and experience. Fair pay in Chicago land for an office position is mid to low 20's. I REALLY want this peds job and don't know if I should sell myself short by saying "upper teens" in order to have them chose me over another candidate who might insist on, say 24.

I would negotiate. Many places offer a flat rate to start. Some do not take into account previous experience. I wouldn't sell yourself short. If you think 14 is too low go higher. I would tell them a higher number to start. Let them know you are willing to negotiate as you are very interested in the position. I wouldn't shoot for the stars though. Good luck!

I would start high and let them negotiate you to 20-23 range

Thanks. The way the interview went today, if they call me back it will be to come in to meet a couple of the doctor's and shadow for a while (or tell me they chose someone else.) So if called to come in, I'll feel like I have a little leverage to negotiate. I'm going to ask for 25 and go from there. I would be happy at 21-22. I just hope they don't ask "what is the lowest you will take?" I hate that.

I asked for 16 at the allergy office (knowing how stingy this family is) He kept saying 13. I finally wore him down to 14. That is completely ridiculous. That is what I made as a PCT in the hospital.

I wouldn't take any less than $21-22.
