Nurses Role in Pediatric Immunizations

I am in my final semester of the nursing program for my associates Rn. I need to write a persuasive paper on a current nursing issue. I am trying to argue that nurses should be more educated on the possible adverse effects of immunizations and some safer alternative immunization schedules in order to fully inform parents of thier options. My theory is that if parents are told by the nurses what the full risks are of both getting the vaccines as well as not and then offered both the CDC immunizations schedule as well as the Dr DAN alternative schedule, that more parents who might have opted not to immunize at all, may chose to immunize on the alternative schedule. I am running into a few blocks, first what are nurses required to say if anything when a parent asks thier opinion on immunizations?

second, as the parent of a vaccine injured child I am very passionate and close to this topic which is making it difficult to narrow down my thesis statement. I am not trying to argue that immunizations are dangerous! In fact it is my beliefe that immunizations are extremly improtant in preventing deadly diseases, however due to my daughters unfortunate condition I believe that parents have the right to be fully informed and offered a safer alternative immunization schedule. How do I relate this directly to nursing, what is a nurses role in the immunization program? Any information would be greatly appreciated as my searches leave me with 2 things total pro immunization groups and total anti immunization groups. Neither is what I am trying argue.

Use a medical research base / nursing research base, i'm sure there is one provided by your college, to find evidence based studies related to the dangers of the common pediatric immunizations. If you can't find substantial evidence that there is some risk, I would choose a different topic. Also, you could talk about being unbiased as a health care provider from your personal experience and remaining objective to the pros and cons as your topic of the article. Just an idea. Good luck

Explore National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program data, perhaps any increase in vaccine related injury with the increase in amts of shot rec'd. Also, a nurse's role is education and supporting family decision making, not selling them one way or another.

I am also the parent of a vaccine injured child, and have chosen to vaccinate my children on an alternate schedule. I don't find that I have a difficult time remaining objective, because I'm not anti vax or pro vax, I'm pro family rights and pro child health. I firmly feel that if we educate our populace and put the choices back in their hands, they are mostly going to do the right thing for their own family. And that goes in the "w" column.
