sumner college vs itt tech

Hello yesterday went to an information session at sumner college I have already checked out Itt tech program...has anyone attended either of these colleges? how were clinical s? were you able to find a job? sumner doesn't offer a clinical in labor and delivery or peds and those are the areas I want to work in so that made me a little nervous, and itt and sumner hospital clinical's are very far away they are not in the Portland area. I dont want to spend 50k on school and not be able to get a job, I know they are pretty much requiring bachelors degrees now which I can continue and get with either school. Is doing this route worth it or should I just become a surgical tech through concorde and work surgery in labor and delivery? please help

They are both proprietary (private-for-profit) schools. ITT has a pretty poor reputation. And Sumner doesn't include L&D or peds clinicals? I wonder how they got (or maintain) BON approval. Credits from either school are unlikely to transfer when you want to complete a BSN. I would look for other programs if I were you.

they have agreements with places so you can finish your bsn... for the l and d rotation you do things with pregnancy houses in Portland, I don't want to do the commmunity college route, so if this isn't a good idea I will go to concorde for surgery tech. I know they are for profit I know they cost a lot that part doesn't bother me.

Really? It "doesn't bother" you that the programs cost a whole lot more than programs at schools with better reputations and accreditation? Is there some reason why you can't get into a community college program? (I realize it's none of my business, I'm just curious ...)

I got my ma done at heald college and did really well and got a job after, I learn much better in that environment vs community college its much more hands on and a smaller classroom size and a set schedule which works better for me with 3 children, to each their own but I have had better sucess in these learning environments

Hey Brittney. Just wondering if you actually enrolled with Sumner college. I am planning to do their LPN program but still have my doubts.

Community college ADN programs do not offer a L&D rotation either, just lifespan care. OCNE curriculum - the majority of community college in Oregon use this curriculum - doesn't have a a L&D or maternal newborn specific course. It doesn't really costs that much more if you have to rake pre reqs at a community college and get all A's in the A&P series and finish all the other courses. Many people I know spent years taking pre reqs and didn't even get in. Now two of them are at Concordia spending even more money just to try to get into a program. Sumner has a good reputation. I work at facility that offers rotations to their students. I am applying for the RN program. They also have an agreement with an online RN to BSN to finish up in 14 months. The total for these two program is MUCH less than any BSN school I have looked at. I guess if you have bills think about it this way. spend 4 years taking classes to prepare for a two program, or spend the money and get done in 24 months and start working.

I know someone at Sumner and has had 4 days at a hospital clinical setting vs CC or universities that go to a hospital, acute care each week. Sumner is new so they do not have agreements for clinicals in acute care here in portland and you need to travel to middle of Washington to do your two weekends of hospital acute care stuff. Other than that your clinicals are in a SNF.

I go to a CC and I do have the option of doing a L&D or Peds rotation if that is something I am into. :) Just an FYI. Good luck!

I also know a couple people who graduated from Sumners and got jobs at the hospital despite their limited clinical rotations at school :)

That is extremely comforting to hear. I am looking to start the RN program at Sumner but am moving ALLL the way from Arizona so when I read some of the posts about not being able to find a job after graduation it has been making me VERY wary...have you been through the RN program at SUmner victorias1? Thanks for the help!!
