  1. They have a good reputation and my friend just completed the RN program and got a job at her clinical site a few days after she passed the NCLEX. She said it was a great decision and everyone who worked at the college was supportive. They also have agreements with other schools so you can continue and get your BSN.
  2. They also have a new person running the nursing program that also started the RN program. I know from a friend that she has improved a lot of things about the program and now students from both programs are doing their clinical classes at placeslike kaiser, plastic surgery, and in pediatrics. Good luck with your decision!
  3. Sumner College is a great program and they have very high pass rates. 95% according to the NCSBN website. I know several nurses who attended and said it was a great decision.
  4. I have several friends that attended Sumner and they all are working and loved it. Once of them is applying for their RN program now.
  5. Community college ADN programs do not offer a L&D rotation either, just lifespan care. OCNE curriculum - the majority of community college in Oregon use this curriculum - doesn't have a a L&D or maternal newborn specific course. It doesn't really costs that much more if you have to rake pre reqs at a community college and get all A's in the A&P series and finish all the other courses. Many people I know spent years taking pre reqs and didn't even get in. Now two of them are at Concordia spending even more money just to try to get into a program. Sumner has a good reputation. I work at facility that offers rotations to their students. I am applying for the RN program. They also have an agreement with an online RN to BSN to finish up in 14 months. The total for these two program is MUCH less than any BSN school I have looked at. I guess if you have bills think about it this way. spend 4 years taking classes to prepare for a two program, or spend the money and get done in 24 months and start working.

  7. I have to give my two cents about this. All nursing programs are hard to get into at the ADN level, and 'for profits' are no exception. All you need to do is pass the NCLEX and get your license to get into the field. I wouldn't recommend anyone to apply to University of Portland if they can go the route of Sumner or another similar type of school. U of P charges $19,000 plus books and fees per semester and the upper level nursing courses are 5 semesters minimum. I met with the school. In addition to that, you have to take a ton of prereqs - that you may be able to complete in 1 to 2 additional semesters if you are lucky. So you will pay for 6-8 semesters at $19,000 each, which is $115K - $150k. Sumner is listed at $46k and then you can go online and get your BSN for around $40K so you have close to half the debt... as far as the job market I work in healthcare and we just look for the BSN and active license.. for what it's worth. If you decide to take the pre-reqs somewhere else then you have to wait until the class is available. So it really comes down to time and money. I know someone who graduated from Sumner that works with me and they got pell grants for school and left with only owing $15,000 in loans when they got done with their LPN program. She is making $22 an hour now so keep researching and good luck!
  8. They are accredited - they have to be to be approved by the OSBN. What you are talking about is an additional national nursing accreditation; which is not required to offer a nursing program. You are right, it may help if you want to go on, but most online RN to BSN programs don't care as long as you have graduated from an accredited program (accredited as in recognized by CHEA and the Department of Education) and have a RN license. I'm with you, as long as I can sit for the NCLEX!
  9. I applied and was not accepted into the first cohort but I studied for the TEAS exam this past year and scored much higher on the exam this time and have been scheduled for a panel. Three of my coworkers attended Sumner and graduated from their LPN program. They all have nothing good things to say about the instructors, the scheduling, and the classes. Two of them want to return to take the RN program as well. All three were of them were hired where I work within weeks of taking the NCLEX. I have heard nothing but good things about the college. Good luck with whatever you choose to do! You can always get your RN and then take an online program to get your BSN!
