How to get an RN job in Oregon

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

What are the odds of getting a job at a hospital as an RN in Oregon with 1+ year of acute care/ICU experience if I am living out of state? I completed my nursing degree (BSN) in Texas and was unable to find a job in any of the residencies/internships in Washington/Oregon and I can't help but feel being so far out of state held me back... I am wondering if it would be any different now that I am an experienced RN. Any opinions or advice? Should I move there prior to securing a job so that I have an Oregon address, or would that just be foolish?

Thanks in advance.

Look into externships and jobs for new grads in Oregon. I know for a fact that Kaiser has programs like this. Providence and Legacy might as well. I know you're not technically a new grad with zero experience, but maybe it would be a good way to get your foot in the door? Good luck!

Now that you have that magical 1 yr of experience it shouldn't be too hard. The Portland market is tough for new grads, but easier for experienced nurses and there is a need for ICU nurses.

The only way to find out is to put in a couple applications and see if you get called back. The last round of interviews I sat in on all 5 of the nurses we interviewed were from out of state.

I was on some kind of hike in downtown Portland that utilizes all 4 methods of mass transit available ( 4 T hike) and we somehow ended up on an elevator in a nice hospital on a hill... I was talking to the person next to me about the hospital and how nice it was and just general niceties about the area and it turns out she was the HR director and she offered to take me to her office and fill out an app right there to get the process started to get me hired LOL! Seems a great attitude, friendly disposition and one year experience will get you where you want to go there :-) I know where you can stay cheap while you job search if you'd like :-)

I just moved back to Portland with one year experience and got several offers about six weeks after I started applying. We have been really short at Providence Portland and have hired five new RNs on my floor alone since I started this winter. I don't think you're going to have trouble finding something. Good luck!

What if an experienced tele nurse wants to get into ICU without critical care experience? Is it as challenging to get a job as a new grad then?
