Applicants to PDX area Nursing Schools 2010

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hi fellow applicants for 2010!!

I wanted to start a thread for all of us who are applying to various nursing schools in the area for 2010. I have applied to five different places: OHSU-Monmouth, University of Portland, Portland Community College, The University of Washington, and Boise State University. I wanted to cover myself and hopefully ensure that I would get in somewhere. I have a really good GPA and experience as an EMT-Basic so I am hoping that that will help my chances.

Just waiting it out until they send out notifications.....I just want to hear back!!! :banghead:

Good luck to everyone who applied!

again, I have to respectfully disagree. There are just as many applicants for the spots at Universities, and often their criteria for admission are even more strict. You have a better chance at getting a spot in a CC because there are simply more available spots. I think applying to many schools is a very good approach but there may be a reason you are not getting in. Really take a look at and think about about what your application says about you and what you can do to improve it. Can you take some more classes to increase your points? can you work on your interview or writing skills, or take a foreign language? I also would encourage you to look into other healthcare professions like OT, PT or RT. It is easier to get a job in those fields right now than it is in nursing. Even if you have to wait 3 years to go to school, the wait will improve your chances at getting employment, because there are literally thousands of unemployed new grad nurses right now in Portland. No one is hiring, and it could be many years before they do. If you want to work in healthcare, look at doing something different than nursing.

Just some thoughts.

Is this advice about going a different health care route because you are a new grad and can't find a job?

dohgirl,

this is based on a lot of different sources of information. I haven't graduated yet, but soon, and I fully expect to have to leave the state to find my first position, despite massive networking and knowing alot of people who work at portland facilities. The local hospitals are simply not hiring. when someone leaves they are filling the spot with a temp and no new grad programs are open at this time. The hospital invests a lot of money into a new grad, something like $60K to bring you up to speed, and their budgets are stretched as it is. They have no incentive to hire a new grad over an experienced nurse. There are plenty of expereinced nurses to fill the positions because they are putting off retirement or have gone back into nursing because their spouses got laid off. I have friends who graduated 2 years ago who haven't found a nursing job yet, the economy is in the toilet and there are far too many new nursing grads coming out of local schools than there are positions available. Thats the reality and its likely to be that way for at least a few more years from what i am told. There are lots of nurses working as CNAs just for the income. The only people from my class that will likely get jobs right out of school are the ones who are being paid by facilities they already work at to go to school and have a promised position when they graduate. That's maybe 3 people out of almost 50. Your school won;t tell you this info because they are in business too. The more students they bring in, the more they make, but they don;t give a crap if you get employed afterwards, thats not their problem, and to be fair, its not their fault either, just the crap economy we have right now. I hate to burst your bubble but thats the reality out there. Lots of reasons. search allnurses to get input from others around the county and ask me again in 6 months.... and consider some other healthcare field in the meantime, at least do some research. good luck.

I'm not too worried about finding a job once I'm out of school considering it won't be for another 18 months at least. By that time, I know more spots will be available ... I know the recession has caused a crazy lack of jobs, but this won't always be the case... RNs will be retiring within the next few years, and from then on it will only continue by the masses (my Mum's been a nurse for 30+ years and is getting closer to retirement age, as is a LOT of nurses from the baby boomer age group). Anyway, most jobs are hard to come by right now in the healthcare field, regardless of position (RN, CNA, MA, PA, etc.)...

Let's try to get back on topic...

I'm eager to hear from the schools I applied to too! If anyone hears, please post!

Cheers.

For Summer/Fall 2010 I applied to

OHSU- accelerated BSN

OHSU- WOU

Chemeketa

U of Portland- on the waitlist for Spring 2011

Linfield- accelerated BSN

University of Colorado Denver

The wait is killing me..... :)

Good luck to all!

Hi, I was just wondering when your letter from UP came? I received a big packet from UP today telling me that I was accepted as a "transfer student". It didn't say anything about nursing, so I'm curious whether my acceptance letter has yet to come.

My letter came Tuesday I believe. It said we regret to tell you that you have not been selected for our Fall 2010 nursing program, but that my grades indicated that they would be high enough to succeed at their program, so I was placed on the waitlist for Spring 2011.

Hope that helps, you should receive something that says Congrats or Sorry.....

I applied to UP also and received the same letter that dohgirl032 did, wait listed for Spring 2011. I wonder how many people are on the wait list?? Oh well, still waiting to hear from UW, OHSU, and PCC..........

Does anyone plan to apply to Clackamas CC this April?

If yes, was anyone able to fish out the information about last year's points needed to be invited to an interview/essay?

I have 54 for this year, does anybody know if it is competitive?

Thank you for the info.

Good luck to you all!

larisagarrett31-I plan to apply to CCC in April, I think I have about that many points for CCC. I had 57 for PCC, hope its competitive but I have no way to know until I receive something. Has anyone heard from PCC yet, good or bad?

Tiffinapit,

I applied to PCC as well, I assume with point number similar to CCC's.

I have not heard anything from them yet, neither did my friend who applied there.
