Is there anyone else feeling really frustrated?

In a few months I will be going up to Alaska to begin the BSN program at the University of Alaska. I applied for two cycles down here, got on the waitlist for multiple schools but didn't get in. I have a 3.8 GPA and experience as an EMT, however I don't have a prior degree or CNA experience. So basically, I'll be up there for a year and a half completing the program and will fly down during breaks to see my husband(who currently is in the military here). It will be tough to be apart but it will go fast and I'll become an RN! These decisions are hard to make and everyone has different circumstances...you just have to make a decision and stick to it no matter what. Good luck in your pursuit...it will pay off!!

    UW BSN Fall 2011

Hey guys! Looks like UW isn't in my future...I am wondering what percentage of the incoming class have prior degrees? Maybe they really are setting up like "med school" :). Anyway I'm not worried...I was waitlisted for OHSU last year so chances are I will get in this year (will hear next month so hopefully I didn't just jinx myself!) I am also accepted to the BSN program at the University of Alaska Anchorage, my hometown, so that's another option. One way or another I know I am starting a program this fall!! Kristina, I am so glad to hear that you were accepted and I second CulleK! Find a way to attend...it would be such a shame to give that up! I know you would regret it!! Congrats to everyone else who was accepted!!

I agree Kristina!! But it won't be long now...probably within the next week. The previous poster is correct the date on my letter from last year is April 2nd so it will be soon!

    UW BSN Fall 2011

I agree...I thought the math part wasn't bad. Although Kristina it's funny that you say that because I had the first one wrong as well and had to correct it. :) I guess when I think about the essay I had an equal balance of discussion about my patient and my relevant experience.

Yes, she said to congratulate ourselves for making it this far...we'll see. I'm wondering why it went from 400 apps last year to 500. I was the same Kristina, I did the math part first to make sure I finished it so didn't have as long for the essay. Oh well, I feel pretty good about it. Time will tell........

    UW BSN Fall 2011

Well last year it seemed like they sent them out in waves. But I believe no one got an email before the specified day. They had the date set for this Thursday but now it's Friday so I don't think I would worry about checking e-mail until Thursday at the earliest. Let me know when you get an e-mail and what your fate is! I'll be sure to post as well.

    UW BSN Fall 2011

Well saying I'm excited for the end of the week is an understatement!:) We'll see what happens...I've been so busy with school and work that time has gone by almost too fast. I'm still working on some other apps as well so that helps. How about you?

    Waitlist for UAA?

I'm not sure what their policy is but I applied to their BSN program in 2009 and was accepted for Fall 2011! I've heard the two-year has a similarly lengthy wait list. I'm not sure what your circumstances are but I would stick where I was if I were you. Even though I'm in there I am still trying to get in at other schools in OR and WA since I moved to OR a few years ago. I don't want to make a claim that you have no chance of going this fall but I had a good GPA as well. I think since it's the only nursing school in AK they have too many applicants than spots available, but that seems to be a common occurrence nationwide. But there is no harm in applying...they may have a different policy for people transferring directly from another nursing program, good luck!

Chelsea, Thank you so much for the advice! It's nice to know that what they stress at their info sessions is consistent with reality. It sounds like you had a great variety of experience going in! Congratulations on your success!

    UW BSN Fall 2011

Yes they require High School transcripts to prove that you have the "essential qualifications" in basic disciplines, English, Math, Science, etc....getting everything in order can be such a hassle! But it will be worth it in the end I know! Although I'm not sure that's required of you since you have a prior degree, but since I assume you still have to apply as a "transfer" applicant the same rules probably apply. Let me know how things develop for you as this years application deadlines roll around. And good luck in your A&P!!

    UW BSN Fall 2011

Kristina111, Yes I feel I have a much better chance this year, if nothing else I have more life experience. I'm pretty young, 22 so it doesn't impact me too much, although I don't think you should consider 28 to be an older student :) It sounds like the experience you're getting is just what they're looking for, as long as you get enough, plus it seems like you have a lot on your plate which looks good. Your two years of French will be fine...don't worry! Mine was a weird situation, it's not for the School of Nursings requirements, it's for UW. I took my language in High School as well which would have been fine, but it was in Alaska where there was a weird language cirriculum. So basically I just had to take two more terms of a college level language to make up for AK's misgivings. :) So do you have a good supervisor picked out to write you reccomendation? It's so comprehensive that it's hard to choose.... If you are a post-bacc did you apply to their Accelerated Bachelors program?

    UW BSN Fall 2011

Kristina111, I am also applying this year, this will be my second go around with UW. I made it to the proctored essay last year but ended up not being accepted to UW due to my language not being accepted. It was a bummer....I think I really had a shot! But oh well! It gave me another year to get more experience, so I've been working as an EMT here in Portland while I take more of my foreign language. So what kind of places are you working? Don't sweat your A&P either, I think they are just looking for people who are well rounded and can succeed in the program. Good luck to you and I'm sure we'll be chatting as the deadlines get closer. Rachel

OHSU BSN PDX program applicants - 2010

I am kind of in the same position as you MacKay...finished all of my pre-reqs, just working as an EMT and waiting to get in somewhere down here. I haven't given up all hope either but I'm for sure thinking about next years applications........I don't think I would feel too down if I were you, at least we got on the waitlist at all. Many, many people were just denied altogther! Good luck to you guys and Im sure it will work out for all of us eventually!
