I love the OR! To all the OR nurses, start posting more issues and experiences on here so I can read read read all about it! I just shadowed for the second time today (I am a second semester nursing student) and don't want to get too ahead of myself, but I am almost positive the OR is the place for me :yeah:. I think I can grow myself some thick skin and wait out nursing school until I can find an OR that takes new grads. Anyways, just want to share my excitement as my roommate is not enthused as she knows for "sure" she will never work in an OR. He he he he. I just cant picture myself anywhere else! :D:D:D:D

I will tell you what I tell all students who want "in" to the OR. Join the AORN as a student. Its about $20.00 and it will be the best $20 you will spend! They have local chapters, and you should start going to meetings and meeting OR ppl. They can help you get a job when you graduate if you impress as a student who has a real interest. Also, their monthly journal is worth the $20 just by itself. It is one of the best journals you will come across, and I am sure you will find interesting articles in their that you can use as citations for research papers in school.

Good luck!

No matter what area you specialize in, join the groups as a student. Most of the time, you'll get discounts the first year or two after graduation on your professional membership.

I am really glad to hear you love the OR, I am a seasoned OR nurse & I still love it..

We have trained new grads....

Good luck to you

I start volunteering in the OR next week and am also a nursing student. Does anyone know if volunteering can potentially lead to employment in an area you want to be in? Thanks.

Really, anything that distinguishes you from the pack or gets your face in front of decision-makers in the department is worth considering doing. Treat your volunteer work like it is one long job interview!

Taketwoaspirin, thanks for your advice. My mom actually said the exact same thing that you said. "Treat your volunteer work like a really long interview.:nurse:
