I was just wondering if you do you clipping for preps in the OR or in the pre-op area. Also does anyone know of any AORN standards for clipping as to where it should be done?

For elective cases, clipping happens in preop. For the non-elective, it usually ends up happening in the OR itself because our preop area isn't open. I don't have a copy of AORN's standards with me, but you should be able to get a copy where you work to look it up- I would think it would be in with prepping.

We actually have one surgeon who does a straight razor shave for cranis, and the other neuro docs use a safety razor- these are usually done by the doc in the OR.

It's better to clip right before prepping because clipping causes microtears in the skin opening it up to infection

Hearts get clipped on the floor just prior to coming to the holding area and everyone else gets clipped in the OR at our facitlity.

Best practice - clipping in the pre-anesthesia holding or prep area. Unfortunately, we clip in the OR after induction.
