Call Back Pay

I was just wondering about the policy on call back pay at other places. I work at a smaller hospital and they don't pay us over-time for a call back if it is during "normal business hours" (Mon-Fri). For example, I'm on call one day every week - Monday. On Monday, I don't usually come in to work at my normal time, instead I'm put on call at whatever time they decide (usually noon or so). If I get called in before 1730, I don't get time and a half. I only get time and a half after 1730. Is this some bizzare rule they've made up to save money on OT, or is this what is done most places?? I feel that I should get OT when I'm called back no matter what time of day it is.

Thanks for the input,

Christine

Depending where you are in the country, I think they have you over a barrel. If you haven't put in your 8 hours for the day they can pay you regular time up to that 8 hours. I am assuming you work 9-5 because of the remark about 1730. There are some states that will only pay you OT after 40 hours in a week and not after 8 here in Calif.

Our union contract states that once you are put on/call, you get standby pay, which is $3.50 an hour and if then call you in, regardless of when that is, it's OT with a minimum of 3 hours. Taking call on weekends where I work is great: you get call pay, plus the OT if you are called in, plus $4.00 per hour weekend differential, plus evening or night diff. Very lucrative on those occasions.

I usually work 6:30-3, and once in a while will work 9-5:30. I guess I'll just be grateful that we got OT after 8hrs/day and not 40hrs/wk.

Well - right now I'm wishing I worked there! I was on call this weekend and we worked 7am until 11pm on Sat. and another 7 hours on Sunday.

Where I work, you're paid $2/hr if you're on call (aka, carry the pager). Now, if you get called in, then you get paid time and a half for a minimum of three hours. So if you get called in for an emerg cysto case and it's less than 3 hrs, you will get paid for the full three hours. And that's the case for 11p-7a during the week, weekends and holidays.

Time and a half, plus shift differential, and the $2 of call pay. On weekends, time and a half, plus shift and weekend differential, and the $2 of call pay.

Our system is almost identical to yours except our standby pay is less ($2.00 an hour) we still get weekend and evening diff.

Where I work, call pay is 30% of normal salary with 1 1/2 X pay for call back. Most of the hospitals in town pay 50% call with 1 1/2 call back. 2 bucks to carry a pager sounds pathetic. You need a better union!
