UBC BSN September 2018 Applicants

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello fellow applicants!

I was browsing and did not see a thread for the 2018 UBC BSN applicants so thought I'd start one.

I am just finishing up my supplemental nursing application and hope to finish my application by the end of today and have already submitted my transcript. Just wanted to know who else is applying/GPA/past experiences with UBC/any tips or information for the application anyone wishes to share.

A bit about myself.. I am currently an LPN working at a hospital and also work part-time in retail in a leadership role, I do not have a Bachelor's degree but am applying anyways (hoping my supplemental weighs heavy in my favour). I have a GPA of 3.55 and will have ~30 credits at the end of this Fall term. I have some volunteer experience working with companies during their charity campaigns and am hoping to do more volunteer work this year. I will also be applying to BCIT, Langara and Queen's University once their applications open up.

Good luck to everyone and please share any information you're able too!

I was SO stressed this time last year so its no problem to me to answer a few questions! Yeah so we had placement options in Surrey, New West, Whiterock, Burnaby, Richmond and around Vancouver.

Do students have any choice over placement options/locations or are they preassigned? TIA

We were able to rank our top 10 of 20 placements, however most of us got near the bottom of our lists (some not on our list.) But everyone found a way to clinical. So don't worry about your placement location too much. I worried about it a lot but at the end of the day your clinical group will work together to make sure you get there.

Hello everyone, I also started September of this year and will try to answer any questions!

On the application supplemental I see you have to list two references. Current ubc students - can you say if your referees were contacted?

Are you putting down only work / volunteer references like you would for employment?

I don't think they were contacted but I never asked. I only used academic references (professors), but volunteer would be fine! They just need something to judge your character off of.

I'm also not sure if my references were contacted but I did let them know beforehand that I am putting down their contact info for nursing school application so they were aware if they were contacted. I used one academic and one volunteer so like @knchilton10 said, I think it's good to choose someone who knows you the best.

Hello EtherealRailgun!

I hope you could answer my question.

As I am not currently a university student, I need to fill out the Education has not been continuous section.

Since Education has not been continuous section is technically separate from the supplemental application resume form below, can I explain some of the things I wrote in the Education has not been continuous in Other life experiences section in more detail?

Hello skihan!

When I was filling out the application form, I was technically still in school even though I was taking only one course: Anatomy and Physiology. So I did not have to check 'Education has not been continuous.'

One thing about application is whenever I had any questions about application, I actually called the office and they always answered really kindly. So you can try to call them or email them. I'm sorry that I couldn't be much help..

Hi all!

I am in the current program at UBC that started this past September as well and willing to answer any questions you guys might have!

in regards to the weighing of the application, @skihan and @maadddyy, the distribution was not given to us but it seemed evenly weighed between the supplemental, GPA, and Casper!

Good luck everyone and take your time editing and reviewing the supplemental, you have till the end of January, use all the time you can!

Hi all - I am also applying for the Sept 2018 intake. I was wondering if anyone is doing or has done the A/P requirement via Athabasca U? I recently started and have no idea what to expect for the first quiz. I also have no idea how I will get through it all in time for next spring!

I was also wondering, for current students, what the workload is like for home studying/assignments etc. Is clinical where most of your assessment is done or is there a lot of work to be completed at home as well? I have two kids - 5 and 8 - and have to seriously plan out all the logistics to make this work if I am accepted (fingers crossed!).

There is quite a bit of work to be done at home. Clinical is a big part of it and is currently two days a week for 8 hours. However in the coming semesters it will be two 12 hours shifts, along with two school days of 6 hours of lecture each days, and a lab day of 2 hours. Clinical days can be either tuesday wednesday or saturday and sunday. The program is condensed and does have lots of random assignments that require group work and time at home. You learn to balance and what is a must read vs a good to read... and ignore other stuff from there! Not sure if that helps a bit but I hope it does!
