HUNTER Accelerated Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi!

I've submitted my NursingCas application for Hunter's Accelerated program in the Fall 2018 semester yesterday, but the more I read about how competitive their program is, I feel discouraged.

I graduated with a BS in Public Relations with 3.83 GPA and started my prereqs last year in January 2017. Currently, I'm only have Microbiology and Genetics to take which I will be taking at Hunter College this Spring 2018. I'm worried that because I haven't fulfilled my prereqs yet even though they say online that as long as the classes are done by June 1st they will accept it, I have this feeling like this is going to affect my chances.

I did most of my prereq classes at QCC and saved two prereq classes to take at Hunter since you have to be a matriculated student to even apply to Hunter's nursing program.

I took my NLN exam in November 2017 and got a composite score of 153. My current gpa at QCC is 3.78. My grades dipped in the fall 2017 semester because I was so stressed over the nln exam.

I've read Hunter Bellevue's website over and over again regarding their accelerated program, but I feel like my application is incomplete... When calculating total gpa, does Hunter average gpas from all colleges attended or only for the grades of the prereq classes?

It would be great for those to share your experiences, overall gpa, nln score etc on applying to this year's accelerated program. I read online that they are even conducting interviews to those chosen, but the forums i read were posted years ago. Did things change?

You don't need to be a matriculated student at Hunter to apply. That always confuses people. You are allowed to have TWO prereqs still being completed when you apply. You have a very strong application, both NLN score and GPA. I would expect that you'll be accepted. If so, you will receive "conditional" acceptance pending completion of your final 2 courses with a B or better. They do not conduct interviews. Only go by GPA and NLN. GPA is calculated by NursingCas in their own unique ways.

Thank you for responding! Are you in the accelerated program? When you go to nursingcas' website, are you able to see their calculation of the gpa?

I just graduated from the accelerated program. When your NursingCas application is totally complete, you will be able to see it and download a pdf copy. They do ALL kinds of GPAs, different years of school, different subject areas etc, and then one OVERALL which is what I believe Hunter uses. I really think you're going to be fine.

Is this after nursingcas evaluates the application? So far I see nothing on the pdf regarding their gpa calculations. They recieved all my transcripts but have not evaluated it yet.

"When your NursingCas application is totally complete.........."

if you go onto nursingcas, under "Check status", it'll only show you your GPA calculation after the application status has been turned to "Verified". Usually, they'll send you an email once the change goes from complete to verified. After around an hour from that email, your GPA should be updated onto that PDF!

Hey! Does anyone know when Hunter will send decisions for the 2018 accelerated nursing class? I thought it was April for some reason, but then I couldn't find that on their website. Other schools have deposit deadlines in March so it would be great to hear earlier. Thanks and good luck to everyone!

They are not super consistent. In 2016, it was May 19.

Would you mind sharing a little about your experience in Hunter's program? Does Hunter give options for clinical placements, or are they mostly at the same hospital? Do they help at all with job placement afterwards (like having a job fair or recruiting events)? Thank you!

You will have no options or choice in your clinical placements. Locations for my class included the VA, Bellevue, Memorial Sloan Kettering, NewYork-Pres-Cornell, Metropolitan, Lenox Hill etc etc. Clinicals are getting more and more challenging for schools with the incredible increase of nursing students over the last several years. Clinical is truly what you make of it.

They were not much help in getting a job. I think the generic students have better resources in this department because there are more students. I had a great Leadership teacher in our last semester that invited some recruiters etc to the class which was great. MSK had a specific career event for Hunter College students but I actually heard about it through the Career Services at the Main Campus rather than from the Nursing School. But that being said, Hunter is highly respected and, especially if you have good grades, you will find recruiters etc. very open to Hunter grads.
