Arizona State University - Summer/Fall 2014

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Who else here is applying to ASU for the summer or fall 2014 cohort? Applications are all due February 1! There are 60 spots for summer dpc, 60 spots for fall dpc, 30 spots for fall at Mayo, and 20 spots for fall at the VA hospital. Lots of options this year. What are you guys choosing? How is your GPA and TEAS? I'm going to be a nervous wreck until i get a letter in the mail that will either confirm or squash my dreams. I really want to get into Mayo. That would be so awesome.

Yeah, I noticed that. What is it? I thought that the $750 "Tuition UG Nursing" was the tuition differential for nursing. Is there going to be an extra $1750 EVERY semester?

I just looked on ASU's website about the added fees. Yes, it appears that there will be an extra $1750 in fees, in addition to all the other fees and tuition, every semester.

"Program Fees: All students advanced to the TPCNP, whether directly admitted or competitively admitted, are charged $1,750 per semester or term for the four semesters or terms of the clinical program in addition to tuition charges. Fees are subject to change."

Thanks for finding that... looks like it comes right from the catalog. I just didn't know if it was an error added or if it was a legitimate charge. It seems weird that the charge was just tacked on in the last week instead of being combined w/ all the other charges when I first registered.

Can anyone tell me how many courses can be in progress during the spring to apply for the 16 month summer program?

Can anyone tell me how many courses can be in progress during the spring to apply for the 16 month summer program?

You can have four course in progress. However, if you have five left to do, you can petition to apply while missing that extra course. That's what I did, and they approved my petition, but they wanted me to have that fifth course done in 8 weeks, so I took an accelerated online course.

Thank you! Very helpful :)

When I dropped off my health clearance paperwork today in the office there was a Senior-2 nursing student who gave me some advice about books:

"Buy the Hardcovers:

Capineto - Nursing Diagnosis

Davis Drug Guide

APA Book"

"Buy Online:

Med Surge"

"Rent the rest"

"Online code, wait"

"Sim Chart, buy first week (12 months)"

What I type above is what she wrote on a sticky note for me, some other tips/hints she told me:

The Davis Guide is *the* book for the Pharm class. The other book isn't worth getting and you probably will never open it.

She really recommended the APA book and said that some professors are really strict about formatting. She said although APA is standardized, professors seemingly have their own style of what they want. I thought that sounded weird -- knew of software programs that do he APA formatting for you -- but she still advised to get the book. I'll probably buy the book being that it costs only $12 off Amazon.

She advised to look at the Blackboard stuff as soon as possible and read the syllabus (usual stuff). She did say they'll be lecturing on day 1 and there won't be any time where they go over the syllabus in class. Generally, she said you could probably wait on buying the books until you knew exactly what you need from your professor.

I asked her about the Saunder's Nclex review book ... said she didn't have it until the end of her program but said some professors take questions right out of the Saunder's review book for exams (and that it's worth getting). I have this book in a variety of e-book formarts and pdf if any of you want to see what it looks like.

As far as equipment -- multiple (3) people have said that the cheapest stethoscope works fine in the program. One person recommended your own blood pressure cuff. Originally I was going to buy the middle-grad stethoscope but since I went ahead and bought the cheapest one, I figured I'd buy the blood pressure cuff with the money I saved.

One last thing, she said we need to put together a Facebook group for our cohort. She said it saved her a few times with reminders on assignments and due dates.

Awesome advice! Thanks for sharing! I think we should definitely start a Facebook group.

Hi Everyone!

I'm trying to get a jump start on getting to know my fellow classmates. I'm starting in the Fall at the downtown campus and wanted to know if anyone else is in this cohort.

Thanks :)

So, how is everyone in the summer 2014 cohort doing the first week? I don't know about anybody else, but I feel a little overwhelmed by all the new stuff that they're throwing at us. I sent my husband a text saying, "Been real nice knowing you, I'll see you next fall."

Hi there,

is anyone else at the VA?

I am also VA, Coming into the program a little late. They called me last week!

I also just got the call last week :) I am so excited! is there a way we can exchange information? It would be nice to know people before we started the program.
