Who else here is applying to ASU for the summer or fall 2014 cohort? Applications are all due February 1! There are 60 spots for summer dpc, 60 spots for fall dpc, 30 spots for fall at Mayo, and 20 spots for fall at the VA hospital. Lots of options this year. What are you guys choosing? How is your GPA and TEAS? I'm going to be a nervous wreck until i get a letter in the mail that will either confirm or squash my dreams. I really want to get into Mayo. That would be so awesome.

Hi! I'm at Mayo as well. I don't think you missed much except for the welcome event (which I actually didn't even get to attend). But so far I've just been receiving a ton of emails on everything I need to do/know before the mandatory orientation on Aug 19th! Let me know if you need me to forward you anything?
Hi @jchandler2! Can you forward me the emails? I haven't received anything from them. My email is [email protected]. Thank you so much! :)
Hi melly1203,
I think it has something to with people deciding on other programs and their spots opening up. It could be that the VA has been in the news so negatively lately, but I am looking forward to being at the VA, it was my first choice and I think the reform that they do to remedy the problems will be very positive.

That is very true. I recently discovered that...(I don't usually watch TV). I am also excited to be at the VA and I think given an opportunity with a government affiliated job is pretty nice. I'm curious if anyone has done clinicals there before or not, this is a new program isn't it? I know Mayo has had students there already.
Many many questions about the first day...
Hi Everyone!
I would have started a new thread but since there are so many people posting on this one it would probably receive more views and responses...
Has anyone on here started this summer? If you have can you explain what your first day, week, month was like? I'm basically very curious what I should expect when I start next week.
Thanks!!
The first week was a lot of general information. Getting to know you stuff, policies, paperwork, lab tours, communication skills, and some simple lectures. You kind of dive right into pharmacology. The first two weeks seemed pretty tame...then the tests started. It seemed like every week we had at least one quiz, test, project, paper, and/or lab practical. Some weeks, like midterms and the last two weeks, we had something big in every class.
As for lab, we started doing skills the second week. The first clinical experience is called Well Elder and you are interviewing a person (typically from a senior or assisted living facility) with a partner. It starts a few weeks into the semester. You'll also be teaching preschool children. These clincals are designed to help get you comfortable with communicating and teaching. Finally, you will be in long term care with your own patient at the end of the semester.
The fall schedule is probably a bit different because it is 15 weeks versus our 12 week summer semester. It can be quite a bit overwhelming but is definitely doable! If you work hard and keep up with everything, you will manage to get everything done! Junior 1 was a great experience. You will meet a lot of wonderful classmates and have lots of opportunities for growth! Good luck!!!

Thank you so much for the very thorough response and all of you advice!! If you don't mind, I do have one kind of silly follow up question… what do you wear to class? Do we start out in scrubs or just in our normal clothes?
thanks again!

No prob! It's rough in the beginning when you have no clue what's going on. Eventually, you learn to kind of just roll with it.
On regular class days (310, 311, 312, 330), you wear regular clothes. For lab days (320), you wear your wine top and white scrub pants. When you start well elder and preschool, you'll be in the white polo and navy pants.
