Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Deltaroxxy2 I must thank you! Because of your post I too contacted the school because I heard nothing. Surprise 2 transcripts were missing. One being a single class I totally forgot about and the other my entire nursing school trasnscript. This one was because my university merged and changed names. Sooooo I had to get an official letter from them confirming this was true. Talk about panic!! I planned on starting in June 20th.

Update

I finally heard today from the OU admissions office regarding the status of my application. Since the application was submitted on 22 February, I would imagine that it will only be another month or 2 until they're able to get back to me regarding acceptance and then just a few more weeks for my transcript evaluation. . .

Academic Outreach Initiative Online RN to BSN

We are pleased to receive your application for the Ohio University Academic Outreach Initiative Online RN-to-BSN for summer 2011. We have now received all transcripts you listed on your application. Thank you.

Applications are currently being processed in priority order based on requested start date. You can expect to receive an e-mail about your admission determination after the review process has been completed. We plan to complete processing summer applications prior to the beginning of the summer start you requested.

Ohio University is in the process of transitioning our computer systems to better serve students. While this change is already beginning to produce improvements in student services, there have been delays caused by unexpected technical issues. As a result, application processing has taken longer than anticipated. Our apologies and appreciation for your understanding as we work diligently to complete the processing of your application.

We want to help you succeed. If you have questions about the review process, e-mail [email protected] or call 1-888-502-8989.

Thank you for your interest in Ohio University and your patience as we transition to a new admissions system.

Sincerely,

Ohio University eCampus

Dummy me totally forgot the transcript for ONE class I took years ago. I missed the deadline and have to wait until September. Soooooo bummed :-( I only found out because I emailed them.

michelemybell, sorry to hear that... my friend was told she had all in and know they said they don't have them all.. She is going to call tomorrow. If she can't start in June,,,,I will wait and we will start in Sept also...keep you posted.. Sorry again...enjoy your summer!! Maybe you can pick up an off class somewhere?

I was hoping to start then as well but I expect to also have to endure a lengthy process regarding my transcript evaluation. The evaluations always seem to be superficial, relying solely on the course title rather than the catalog description. So despite completing 4 upper-level psych classes, I expect to be told that I need to take Intro to Psych because the title of my intro course was "Human Behavior I". The bottom line for me though is that with nearly 300 credits worth of classes in liberal arts, science, engineering, business and nursing, I'm pretty sure I've satisfied all of the OU prereqs and I'm not going to start until all the issues are resolved and I have a clear course map.

thanks nursesue100. I have begun investigating THAT process as well and summer classes are limited!! I only know of 2 classes for sure that I need to take because they did not review my stuff yet. (chemistry and anatomy II)

Update: This week marks the 4 month anniversary of my application for this program. So far, all I've gotten back from OU is an e-mail saying that I may need to wait until next month to find out about acceptance into the program and that the transcript evaluation will follow (maybe in July?).

While I'd planned to start in the summer session, it looks like I'll be lucky to start in the fall.

With this many problems I would be very skeptical about the program in general. Lack of communication and inefficiency in processing applicants are big red flags regardless of their excuses. I hope you find a good fit soon. You are more than qualified to complete only the essential nursing courses. This is bogus!

I have a college that is almost done with the program. She said the admission program STINKS! But now that she is onboard and taking classes, it is going well and the communication is much better. Several at my hospital are taking this program.. so even though I am running into the same "drag me out" crap. I am going to stick it out for the PRIZE!. Try to sit back and let the process work :)

My fallback school (UT-A) is not much better. Though they responded much more quickly - I applied there 2 weeks after OU and got my acceptance and course map in late March - they have been abominable in terms of the evaluation. Despite having 6 English courses and a graduate degree in business (with several of my research papers submitted for publication!), they maintained that I needed to take both technical writing and another literature course. They stated that the they could not determine the volume of the research and writing for the grad courses and that undergrad course numbers indicated that all my English classes were at the freshman level. This tells me that they do a very sloppy job as a quick peek at the catalogs or a brief phone call would have settled the issues. On a similar note, UT-A was adamant that they would not accept my intro to psych course, apparently because the course title was Human Behavior I and they again were not willing to look at the catalog. I've had the department directors from my alma mater's English and Psych departments send e-mails to UT-A but even that apparently isn't enough: The latest is that they will not phone anyone and that I need to get formal letters on university stationary sent.

As my dad might have said: The difference between those 2 is like the difference between horse sh*t and manure.

I'd say your Dad hit the nail on the head! By the time they get this figured out you could have completed a DNP program! Good luck to you.
