Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Hi all, I have a couple general questions about OU's program. Once you start, must you take a course every 5 weeks, or can you stop and start as your schedule allows? Is it an option to take the courses in 10 week blocks? Do you decide which one you want at the beginning or can you switch between the 5 and 10 week sessions?

The above post mentioned NRSE 370 J for the junior comp requirement, does anyone know if that will be available online?

thanks!

For the RN to BSN completion program, all nursing courses are 5 weeks long. They do have classes that are 15 weeks (no more 10 week come fall) but these are the non core nursing courses. So that would depend on what you need. This includes the Arts requirement, cross cultural, statistics, junior level english, nutrition, etc. Just depends on what you have taken in the past and what you may still need. All the courses are available online for the most part.

As far as taking time off, you can take time off if you need it, but if it is anytime besides summer there is a form you have to fill out to start back up. So you can't really just do a class or 2, take a break.. come back.. take another break, so on.

You can see when all the core nursing courses are offered, as each class is NOT offered all the time, so you can plot all those out. Then you need to fill in whatever other courses are needed.

Might be good to point out if you are getting fin.aid you to take at least 6 cr hours/ semester. Semesters are 15 weeks long, the classes are still 5 weeks each/so 3 courses per semester. Non nursing courses are 15 weeks.

My advisor did not know anything about the new Nursing Junior English class. Has anyone heard anything more about when this my show up on schedule? If it doesn't come forth I will be graduating two weeks later because of the Junior English Business class. Yuck!

I believe if you stop you have to reapply for admission, but I'm not 100% certain about that. I had a friend who took some of the nursing classes in a 10 week format and some in a 5 week format. However, I don't know if that option is available with the change to semesters in the fall. I was told at the beginning of the year that they were working on a NRSE 370 J for the junior comp requirement that would be in a 5 week format. I would venture to say it will be online. I am taking Business JR. COMP now, and it is online.

Just want to clarify, the last class, excellence CAN be taken with another nursing class, correct? I plotted all my classes out last night, and I should be able to finish in April. I wanted to double up the rest of the way through, besides session A for fall, but the way the classes are offered it's just not possible.

Yes…You can double up with excellence.

Any word on the Nursing Junior Comp class? It does not show up on the Fall schedule. Is this really going to happen?

I have sent another email to my advisor to find out if she has heard anything.

I really hope they have their act together and offer it on january!

any thought on taking family nursing (4530) & (4560) gerontologic nursing care together or (4570) diversity & (4580) leadership in nursing. i am wondering which combination is less stressful. thanks

I transcript is literally worth the paper it is printed on, plus postage. The rest is pure profit. Many schools raise the cost of transcripts when the budgets fall short, because after all, the Alumni area all successful and rich and should support their school, right? ;]
