Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Specializes in lots of specialties.

I would still submit all classes as they can still count towards your electives, which could mean less filler courses to complete your degree

Luckily, the classes I did poorly in are not ones required for the BSN. If I don't really need or want to transfer any of those classes, do I even have to submit the transcripts from that school?

DeltaRox- do you know which courses have proctored exams?

I am not sure because the only class I am taking there besides nursing now is Nutrition. I was told by some coworkers that there are proctored exams.

I am taking classes@Sinclair which I am NOT enjoying except the History of Pop/Rock Music(for an art credit) I go to "live class" but it IS offered online!

My online classes at Sinclair are NOTHING like the OU experience. I guess the saying is true"you get what you pay for". If anyone is contemplating taking anything online at Sinclair feel free to email me privately. I can fill you in on the sad details of being treated like a second rate person. When I am done with my semester at SCC I am going to copy the letter from the Dean @ OU and send them a nice little letter...and telling them I am pursuing making some changes for future students there!

I did take PHIL 130 Intro to Ethics...no proctored exams but wayyyyyy harder than any nursing class. All tests and BB posts. NO papers. I decided I loved papers after that class. I pulled a A- but not without lots of headaches. It REALLY makes you think!

OUstudent:Which of the classes have protored exams?

Yeah The academic outreach program is now $7,000+.and your right it is still a good bargain

Looking at the classes required to graduate, I was starting to think I might need to retake microbiology. The class is a 201 level at OU and at my nursing school it was a 155. But....my nursing school is a partner with OU and I found a transfer credit listing and my microbiology is transferable!!! So, aside from the nursing classes, I may only need to take a fine arts class...which if available online I may take history of rock and roll music.

Now to get my transcripts in. Hope/plan to start in the fall since I missed the application deadline for summer.

I don't think too many since the nurses courses seem to allow you to take quizzes/test online timed. Only course so far that I've needed a proctor has been statistics.

HX of Pop/Rock is available online at Sinclair Community College. I attend the class"live" and its pretty easy. I am not sure how the online version works. "live class" requires a weekly lecture. For example my class is 830 am to 11 and about 1030 he takes a break and gives you an inclass essay that is worth 10 points every week.Easy to get all the points if you just show up and not sleep through class(no one does that its pretty interesting). Steve Langemo teaches it and he is a pretty kewl dude. Also there is a weekly quiz worth 10 pts each. Then the only other requirements are a presentation(I am doing mine on Crosby ,Stills Nash and Young) worth 50 points and a performance review(you get to pick where) worth another 50. So the tests were easy also but I grew up in the 60's and know so far everything that was on them with little studying.

I would not recommend taking anything else there though. My experience is that OU has ssssoooooooooooooo much more support from it's teachers.I get that you are a second rate student from my experience with other instructers at SCC all of which are adjunct teachers that take at lest 3 days to answer your emails then they just copy and past something that you already read as their way of "helping" you. I am glad i am only there a semester!

Technically they require you to submit all of your prior work. I know someone that didn't but who knows if it would ever come back on them? Doubt it. They don't even have time to handle the admissions they have let alone be a detective to see if you took a class somewhere you flunked and do not want to send them a transcript! If you took anything after 2005 and it was a D- or above you can use it for elective credit by state law. It will NOT affect your GPA @ OU....so unless its an F I would definitely transfer it over. All you need is a 2.0 I believe to get admitted into OU. But I do not think they would like it if you transferred it over after you sent your original transcripts from anywhere else. I believe that would be a violation of the spirit of their requirements to have ALL of your transcripts up front. So you have to decide if you want to retake something just for your pride or suck it up and let them see you are human and you didn' perform up to your normal academic work. Things change. You would not be the first student to have a poor grade they are embarrased about!

Electives at OU need to be the ones they specify in order to cost $153/credit hour otherwise the tuition is higher. There's a cultural class...Asian something or other that's $153//hr but if you choose something else it will run much higher so choose wisely. They accepted my D in statistics so I'm sure your DARS reports will be a nice surprise to you all. I had my final DARS before time to start classes...but the whole experience left me drained and very uncomfortable. It's a challenging institution to navigate to say the least!

I do not know if this has been answered in the previous posting, but does OU require clinicals.

diva nurse

NO OU does not require clinicals

Only the support courses. Ethics(PHIL 130 does NOT) I know Nutrition does and I believe statistics does but not sure about that. I really can not answer correctly other than I know the nutrition class does.

How was Nutrition? Hard/easy? Lots of papers/quizzes?

Thanks
