Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

hi .. I went excelsior also.. did you find out if transitions tranfers for OU?? Thanks Susan, PA

Hi .. what rn-msn program is 7200 $ ????? :)

Hi .. what rn-msn program is 7200 $ ????? :)

That's roughly what Ohio University says their on-line RN-BSN program costs. It assumes you have all the prereqs (math, stat, micro, nutrition, etc) but it is among the least expensive out there. The Univer of Texas-Arlington touts theirs at about $6,500 - that's the lowest cost program I'm aware of.

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought you meant RN-MSN. I called the enrollment specialist yesterday. They said they have all my transcripts and I should receive a email in about 6 weeks.

Specializes in Home health was tops, 2nd was L&D.

Aspen University is about $7200 for RN-MSN, and I am told with a AS degree in nursing and current license you get into nursing right off, no pre-reqs, AS degree is your pre-req. All online, 2 starts a month, CCNE. And you can even ask to have the DEAN call you and she will or email!! And you get live person on phone. no BSN given, straight to MSN, educator or leadership. Also Western Governors Univ is less money for BSN if you work your 6 mos semester correctly.. not easy but can be down in 6 mos, they also have RN-MSN. They have pre-reqs but not alot of liberal arts stuff like Univ at Arlington, Univ of Wyoming. I have not spoken to Ohio Univ just read what people have posted..seems they require alot, tiers and stuff..seems complicated and I hear alot of complaints about them not responding promptly or DARS not being correct until student fights. And waiting months to get DARs, that is bizarre to me. Just sharing ideas.

Thanks shannon, I want to keep up with what they ultimately tell you, cuz I am hating to have to take a lot of unnecessary courses. Also if I have to take the gen ed classes there to be sure they accept them, its a lot more oney than I would be paying here locally... I was reading about what they charge for normal out of state credits...its quite a bit more...not sure how to approach it, if I should try to find classes here and hope they count, or wait and maybe not have enough money....I would like to know if they accept your chemistry, since they dont offer it online....my school offers a fundamentals of general chemistry, I was hoping that would be sufficient if I made a good grade..Im an a student. Cept a B in microbiology uggg!!!

SO far I have taken

Anat 1 and 2 (A for both)

Microbiology with lab (A in lab, B in lecture)

Sociology (A)

General Psychology (A)

Developmental Psychology (A, And someone said they may accept this for the Child development)

English comp 1 (A) (havent taken two, do I need to?, or is english comp 1 sufficient to satisfy the junior english?)

Understanding theater (A) (Hoping this will satisy the fine arts.....but it wont satisfy both humanity and fine arts will it? (One can hope)

Principles of nutrition (A)

Medical terminology (A)

Intro to pharm (A)

whew...thats it so far, Im beginning CNA classes at the red cross in four days, and I start ADN program in August. I want to be sure about where and how to get my bachelors, because I ultimately plan on becoming a CRNA (Hence the CNA classes to get my foot in the door at sacred heart hospitl, so I can possibly get a job when I graduate directly into ICU.

If you have a sec, how do you THIK they will treat my DAR?

Thanks and good luck:)

ALso I never took a college math class, but when I took the college placement test, they tested me out of having to do math. I noticed it says ohio accepts math courses labelled 109 or better as being sufficient to satisfy.... 110 is college algebra, so...I was thinking, since i dont have advanced placement, i dont have SAT or ACT scores, will they accept CPT tests i wonder, or should i take a college algebra before going?

Specializes in lots of specialties.

looking over Aspen Univ site it still looks like you will end up taking the same courses as with a BSN for OU ( regarding your liberal arts courses) and it looks like you have clinicals hours for them as well. The MSN specialty are not any that I am interested in( am looking into a NP or CRNA program. So I will stick with OU. I think the communication problem are their biggest issue but the rest I find normal. So I will keep going. Im still doing the math on how long it will actually take for me to finish but I dont think it will be much over 1 year

Tiffany: You will need to take Math regardless of what level you tested to at another school. The 109 or above courses are their classes. Not courses from another school. You will need algebra prior to taking Statistics. I would say your best bet would be to take what ever general education courses you need prior to admission.

Anat 1 and 2 (A for both) THIS WILL ACCEPTED

Microbiology with lab (A in lab, B in lecture) ACCEPTED

Sociology (A)ACCEPTED

General Psychology (A)ACCEPTED

Developmental Psychology (A, And someone said they may accept this for the Child development)ACCEPTED

English comp 1 (A) (havent taken two, do I need to?, or is english comp 1 sufficient to satisfy the junior english?)YOU NEED ENG1 AND 2 TO GET YOUR FRESHMAN ENG REQUIRMENT.

THIS WILL NOT BE COUNTED FOR YOUR JUNIOR ENGLISH. yOU NEED A 300 LEVEL ENG CLASS FROMA 4 YEAR COLLEGE NOT A 2 YEAR.

Understanding theater (A) (Hoping this will satisy the fine arts.....but it wont satisfy both humanity and fine arts will it? (One can hope)THIS SHOULD COUNT

Principles of nutrition (A)iF THIS WAS A COLLEGE COURSE FOR NUTRITION IT MAY

Medical terminology (A) Intro to pharm (A) DONT THINK THESE WILL COUNT TOWARDS ANYTHING

I just wanted to let people know that when you call Aspen University they explain the AS degree gets you into the RN-MSN program.. you do not have to meet the liberal arts requirements for the new RN-MSN program,, the web site explanation of credits needed does not apply to College of Nursing. Your 2 yr degree in nursing is all the pre-reqs you need. I was concerned but I have spoken to others who confirmed this is correct. It is new and I do not go there but thought others might find the price appealing and want to investigate further. Of course it is not for everyone but those looking for Educator or Leadership might have interest.

Shannon, can I ask what your area of nursing your degree will be in? I thought NP was something you got after getting MSN, sorta post-graduate? Does Ohio offer MSN as NP??

I am still not positive what I want to be when I grow up!:clown: Just scoping out other ideas. Appreciate all the inof you have shared:)

Thanks shannon.... I meant tthat their class is college algebra and thecc I go to has a college algebra class that maybe I should take it and transfer iy. I don't know if it matters but earlier this year Gulf Coast community college became Gulf Coast state college hmmm... thanks for all the help... I hope they accept your. Chem, that would suck for u to have to take it over
