Unhappy with CSCC...are there any alternatives?

U.S.A. Ohio

I submitted my application to CSCC at 9:00 am this morning. Later today, I found out that dozens of other people had the same idea. They camped out in the computer lab and all waited to hit the 'enter' key at 9:00 am. The application was supposedly for Spring '11, but only a few people will get in due to the overwhelming number of applicants from the Fall '10 crowd. I'm fairly certain that I will not start until almost a year and a half from now. I find this frustrating, considering I have the same chance of getting in as someone who has much lower grades than mine (I have a 3.9 GPA). Are there any good alternatives to Columbus State out there?

good luck to you, ForeverLaur. really. i hope you get in. ill need someone on the inside thats a step ahead to give all the insight i need to navigate lol.

glad someone else is hoping i get to start in march too! :) my backup career is to be an academic advisor (looove it) so ask away! if i don't know the answer, i can usually find it and a good friend is in her semester quarter (part-time) so she's a good source of info too.

That would be awesome to have an employer pay for my education. My employer only pays about $1000/year for tuition assistance and requires you to sign a contract. No thank you.

What kind of contract do you have to sign? We have to pay upfront and once we show proof we passed the course with a B or higher, they give us the $$ for tuition, books, supplies, etc in our paycheck up to $3k every 12 months. We have to remain employed 6mo after we receive the $$ so worst case scenario, I pay for the 7th quarter myself and quit when I graduate, but I have a feeling I may not be getting a job right out of nursing school soo...

I work at a mail-order pharmacy and for anyone job hunting... we're hiring!

No one is a getting a job now in this economy. The nursing shortage in this country appears to be satisfied temporarily. However, when we graduate two or three years from now, it might be a much different story.

*fingers crossed* :D

Just reading through some of the posts...

I am currently in the RN program and believe me it IS a lot of work. I remember hearing the "scare" talk at orientation as well and thinking that it was just a tactic to get you scared so you don't fall behind. It isn't a scare tactic- they are being very upfront about what to expect. I was a straight A student before beginning the program and now am having to work very hard just to make B's in the classes. There is an adjusted grading scale (they don't use the CSCC standard) so you have to get higher percentages to get A's and B's. Also there are about 20-25% of people who don't make it past the first quarter - not because they drop out but because they fail. The first two classes you take are meant to weed people out of the program. We started out with 95 people (I think) and now we have about 70. Many people do take the part time option - I personally didn't take that option but I seriously wish I had. Anyway good luck to you - the faculty is really great and they will help you out if you ask!

I took excessive coursework in college to help prepare me for the mindset of nursing school. Luckily my full-time job allows me the opportunity to study and outside of work, I have zero obligations. This is a second degree and second career for me too. One quarter I took 21 credit hours at one school (anatomy w/ cadaver lab for premed, biology for premed, chem for premed, calc II) and then at another school I took 10 credit hours (pharmacology and medical terminology). I almost died lol.

I agree, they didn't scare us too much. Sure they explained that it was a lot of work, but I was impressed with the relationship that the student reps seemed to have with the faculty. It does sound like their drop rate first quarter was a lot better with the new supplemental program. The SNA rep said that out of 120 who started with her, they have 85ish left.

I didn't get a total on my uniforms, but somewhere around $60 for 1 set. White scrub top and navy scrub pants, polo and nametag.

Did they give you an option of buying your own scrubs instead of ordering through them? Just wondering, because I need a Petite XS in pants and not sure if they have that size or not.

I don't know what quarter you're in, but they started a tutoring program last quarter and brought that attrition number down to 8%!:yeah: It seems like a pretty cool program, it's headed up by a lady [no names allowed on here] who's going to do her thesis on it. I'm making A's now, but I started a new job on Monday, and I'm trying to decide whether or not to try and take pathophys online with my two nursing classes 100 & 110 [traditional] next quarter... any thoughts? I didn't want a gap in the sequence of anatomy, phys, and pathophys, but I'm really worried about the amount of time that I'll need to put into these first two classes on the other hand all of nursing school will be time intensive. I will only have Pathophys, Micro, and the two Comm classes left as of next quarter. They really did try to talk us into p/t nursing school. But I just don't want to delay graduating. Oyi, so many decisions!

They said that any scrubs you buy elsewhere have to be approved because everyone MUST look the same. I know they had XS, but I don't remember Petite or Longs. HTH!

I took Patho online last quarter and it was a lot of work. We had 4 unit tests plus a final, 12 unit case study quizes and 12 unit quizes as well as several written assignments. I did well in the class, but we had quite a few people drop. Micro's also a fair amount of work, but so far my on campus micro course has not been as intense as my online patho class was.

Personally, I would take the advice of the students who were at the meeting and not take anything else 1st quarter. Or at least take a comm class or something, not a major science.

I'd agree, but 2nd quarter isn't any better.... involved clinical, pharmacology, and a skills lab...

I'm taking micro/patho (hybrid/online) winter together with a full-time job with the hope it'll get me on the right path to take on nursing school in the spring!!
