Columbus Ohio=no new grad rn jobs

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

I'm a new grad RN( just passed boards a couple weeks ago). I went to school at Xavier University-graduated with my BSN in may, and relocated back to the columbus area.....one problem.....there is no new grad rn jobs

I started my job search back in JANUARY!literally.....I applied to the OSU residency for new grads----didnt get it b/c i didnt have the right "experience" - so i kept searching.....i have expanded my search to all of the major health care systems in the area including Ohiohealth, Mount Carmel and Nationwide Childrens. yep-not even had a call back..... I have had my resume re done 3 times.....twice by a HR specialist and former nurse recruiter.....

I spend all of my days-literally appyling for jobs...tweaking my resume and objective here and there and trying to network. I have even made leads with some of the nurse recruiters....some helpful.....some not. I even had a recruiter tell me "tough market, good luck" seriously though? you have got to be kidding me......I am a bachelors prepared RN, and cannot get a job within the hospital to gain essential bedside experience.

Im getting very very discouraged, being forced with the idea of relocating, and moving very far away from my family, friends and home yet once again. Not sure what I should do. Excess school bills are rolling in and im unemployed.....

I heard the other day that Columbus, OH is one of the worst cities in trying for trying to get a RN job. I am defiantly experiencing this. and i realize I am not the only new grad not getting hired......but i just dont know what to do anymore.....I'm really feeling helpless and discouraged to why did I even become a nurse in the first place. I always heard the saying that nurses always have jobs and theres a nursing shortage-that is a big fat lie.........if this was the case.....I probably would of went into another helping profession i.e. social work or something if I would of known there was going to be such resistance to hiring new graduate RNs across the country.

thanks for listening to me complain....but sometimes when i try to explain to my family what is going on.....they just dont understand......

I was counting emails today, 27 job applications...way less than 250. I am at the beginning of my search. I don't think that I can move to Akron because I would need the funds to do so. I am still applying at my current hospital for nursing positions and at the other local hospitals in Columbus and surrounding areas. I think that I am thinking more about finding a job than my passing boards. Good Luck to those of us looking for jobs.

I'm in the same boat, as well. The summer after graduation, I sent out resumes throughout Central Ohio to no avail. I then had my resume professionally written. Still nothing. Hopefully, the fact that I have been pursuing my BSN and on track to graduate in March will start to help.

My question is, how should I handle the additional stress from family (incl. MSN mother-in-law) who don't understand that there's very little opportunity for new grad RNs, at this time? Additionally, they can't understand that job seeking etiquette has changed; that calling over and over is a nuisance and not the sign of an enthusiastic candidate.

I wouldn't wish this stress on anyone, but it's nice to know I'm not alone.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

CCF hiring New GRADS!!!

25 graduates from my class got into the clinic within the past 3 months!

Yes there are new grad positions, but not everyone gets them. You are lucky that you were able to get in to one. I have worked at OSU for 5+ years as a PCA and I can't get a job there, didn't get into the internship program. And that is with having all kinds of connections and experience, but because I don't have my Bachelors and didn't go to OSU I am at the bottom of the barrel.

DaVita in Ohio are training new nurses how to be hemodialysis RN's check out their website

If there were new grad positions there aren't any now.

What program did you graduate from?? I know a lot of people that graduated from Columbus area schools in May and they all have jobs in Columbus now.

Well they must all be really lucky that they were able to find jobs because I am having no luck.

I am a LPN that just graduated with my RN last August. It has taken me until now to just get my foot in the door for a hospital, and as an LPN I'm not from Ohio and had travel and hospital experience. I also worked for a subacute/high acquity LTAC. Right now there are tons of jobs at OSU, someone told me that when you do the online application click that you at least have 1yr exp or it kicks the application out. Also check out Regency Hospital or Select Speciality Hospital. They will help you get your yr exp and get a foot in the door and offer good training even up to learning how to put in PICC lines. It does help to know someone, but just keep trying. Another idea is possibly trying Adena Hosp in Chillocothe I did my clinical there it's a 30 minute drive but it's a really nice hospital now as big as the Columbus ones but again exp it what you need, and year should do it. Good luck!

I talked to the nursing recruiter for Select and Regency Hospital and she basically told me they don't hire new grads and wished my luck, recommended that I try to get a job in a nursing home...

Really? I work at OSU as well (PCA) and a few nurse managers have said that when I graduate with my ADN that my application will be a "formality" and that I can consider myself hired. I hope they were not lying to me. :uhoh3:

Well I don't think they would lie to you, but osu typically only hires new grads in the internship programs, I work on a medical surgical floor and my manager won't hire us uness we go through the internship, which I interviewed for and didn't get. My friend did get in and she said there are very few and nurses who were hired. It may be different floor to floor, but that's pretty much been my experience. I am still applying for a lot of the job postings & hoping for the best. What floor do you work on? I am on 10 west doan, but only until the middle of january. I don't know if you have been told that 90 days after passing nclex you can't work as a pca anymore...

Well, I am still in school to become a nurse. I haven't graduated yet :) I guess time will tell.

Best of luck to you! I know you are in the best possible position to get hired there.

I'm a float, but I spend most of my time in Ross because that's the internship track I am hoping to get into.

Well thats good, it may be different at the Ross, but for the most part that is how it is at the main hospital. Best of luck to you as well! :)

OSU no longers hires anyone with a ADN. They must have a BSN. Sigh.
