Would you assist in abortions?

I am just curious. Would you ever work in an abortion clinic? Would you give pills that would cause an abortion? Thanks

Since you work on a psych unit, obviously you are seeing a skewed population of only the women who are seriously distressed, not the majority of women who don't have emotional sequelae after an abortion ... I get v. tired of the pro-life movement trying to convince women that they will be emotionally devastated for the rest of their lives if they terminate a pregnancy. And I'm not even going to touch your other comment ...

OK, usually I just sit back , read and keep my mouth shut. BUT.......my sister had an abortion when she was 19 due to parental demand, or so she says, both parents deny this claim to this day, and "it" took place 15 years ago. Three years later she became pregnant again and has had two children. Now she desparately talks about the one child "she lost" and remains depressed and on anti-depressant medications. Now to the question at hand- I would never consider assisting with an abortion. Granted, I too work psych :) , however my views on this topic were formed long before I even had considered being a nurse. Like someone posted earlier in the list..."there are plenty of nurses who are willing to assist....".

I wasn't gonna weigh in on it but I had to share this story with you...First of all let me say that I neither support nor condone abortion...I DO, however, support a person's right to choose for herself what is best, and I get nervous when people talk of taking those rights away...As to the whole debate of when exactly a fetus is alive, I will agree with an earlier post saying that, in a nutshell, they're not technically 'alive' until birth, the deciding factor in my case being a definition of life as being able to perform the life processes independently (excretion, respiration, etc...) BUT I'm getting off the subject here and I'm not here to debate that subject! lol...

About a month ago, a little girl who lives about an hour from where I live was raped by a family friend...she got pregnant, and is about to give birth...she is TEN YEARS OLD :angryfire ...to me, that is child abuse...Her parents stated that they think abortion is wrong and that they will 'help her raise the baby'...I believe they have every right to think that, but I don't understand how they could ask their ten year-old daughter to go through the delivery. Instead of playing with Barbie dolls, this child might not even live through such an ordeal as labor...Just one of those areas where abortion gets 'gray'...

As an answer to the earlier question, yes I would assist in abortion or give a pill (but probably won't since the thought of being shot coming out of work scares me more than the procedure), and I would most definitely assist in care of a woman who's had one...I'm only the nurse, not the judge!

Have a nice day! :)

RN-in-training! :chuckle

IF i chose to work in that kind of an environment/facility/clinic...that means i'm ready to help people no matter what right? it's not up to me to judge...we should not descriminate as to their decisions and choices...buti choose NOT to work in a facility like that, so i don't have to make that kind of decision...meaning i'm not comfortable doing it either.

Several seem to think I am being "holier than thou" to say I would absolutely not assist with an abortion. I have, in fact, had more than 26 years nursing experience, and when given the choice, I did walk out of an OR suite, rather than hear a helpless baby sucked out piece by piece. I am not being holier than thou, but some patient's "rights" are not going to take precedence over mine, in this case. If you recall, the question was "would you assist", not do you agree......I will care for a patient after it has been done, without comment, as I did in Recovery Room. But I will not assist!

I am currently readin a book titled BLOOD MONEY, written by an EX abortionitst.... her description of HOW many FINGERS AND TOES were put down the GARBAGE disposal made me want to VOMIT.... FINGERS AND TOES belong to HUMAN BEINGS.... DEFENSLESS HUMAN BEINGS.... More woman were KILLED or permanently INJURGED at the abortion facilities she spoke of... I think women should think TWICE about their OWN HEALTH and what it could cost THEM in the long run.... GIVE the child UP to people who WANT it rather than killing it... Guess you can tell my answer is NO WAY JOSE' would I ever do such a thing!!!!

The role of the nurse in assisting with abortions is critical. Everyone here seems hung up on the actual procedure--but think about the big picture here!!! A lot of the patients are young, uneducated woman. While in recovery, it is the nurse's job to educate, educate, educate! There are a lot of birth control options that your patients don't know about! I was doing a rotation at the public aid clinic (which is big) and most of the patients I ran into during that rotation were poor, uneducated woman, who were very young (mostly under 20 years of age), and didn't speak English. About half had venereal diseases. Most all of them had been abandoned by their boyfriends and a family member was helping them deal with the aftermath.

A lot of them wanted abortion referrals.

I am pro-choice, but do not work in the ob/gyn field, but if I did, I would think the support and direction you would give that patient would be crucial.

I have never met a woman who WANTS this procedure done. I have met lots of woman who think it is the ONLY option for them at that time in their life. I have never met a woman who would want to go through an abortion again.

Hence the important role of the nurse.......

There for the Grace of God goes me. And I am Catholic. :)

I would give up my license first

I think every woman should have the right to choose what she feels is right for her situation. I work in pediatrics and love children, so I do not believe that I could assist in an abortion procedure. However, I would not judge someone else for doing so.

Yes I would assist in an abortion, and I would assist in the management of the patient after too.

We can discuss this offline later if you choose.

Abortion has been shown to be safer than pregnancy and birth. I am all for adoption, but not if women are being scared into it with false information.
