I'm watching this show right now on Lifetime. I like it! It's pretty realistic I think. My hospital is very similar in terms of high volume, high epidural rate.

What did everyone else think?

I'm watching it now. Her doula is way out of line. According to their scope of practice they are not allowed to speak directly to the hospital staff on behalf of the patient. She is a prime example of why doulas have bad reputations. Doulas can be beneficial to the entire family if they know their boundaries.

Yeah I felt really bad for that nurse. The doula and husband were so annoying and pushy and condescending!

I guess that is the reality of life in L&D! :D

I also couldn't figure out why they were there. Was it a post-dates induction? Didn't seem like it since she wasn't on pit till the very end. Was she just in her own labor? If so why was she in the hospital for 24 hours?! She should have been at home in her tub.

Maybe she had a cervidil that kicked her into labor and they just didn't show that part?

Wait, is this show really real? Or is it "The Bachelor" real...

I seen the commercial- when that dude drops the camera on the baby I crack up

I was unsure of why the naturally birthing couple were admitted either. They said that she was 2 weeks past her due date, but she refused Pitocin, so what did they start her labor with? I thought the show's editing really made natural birthing look bad. They made fun of this poor couple who wanted to try to do everything natural. I agree that they appeared ridiculous at times and that the Doula overstepped her boundaries, but I feel like they tried to find the most extreme and ridiculous stereotype of natural birthing.

I thought it was some sort of Blackberry or something -- but yeah, it cracks me up, too.

:lol2:

The natural birth mom was induced with a foley (I think she was past her due date) and then they broke her water early in the morning. She agreed to pit after stalling at 8cm for about 8 hours. She also had about 4 nurses and the one they showed was the one they really didn't like. I don't really think she showed nursing in the best light. Mom was very well researched on birth and knew what she wanted. I think the nurse came off as pushy and phony. She was all gooey sweet on the phone with the midwife, "She doesn't want me to check her. She only wants you." It makes sense to only have 1 person assess you. *shrug*

It's easy to say that she should have been at home or a birth center but that's not always possible for every woman. There may not be any local birth centers or insurance may not cover them.

I disagree. Based on what they showed on the program, IMO she didn't do anything out of line. She was being an advocate for her client, and I didn't see her overstepping her bounds and offering medical advice. She asked the nurse what their options were, and what were the potential ramifications of the different options. There's nothing wrong with that.

I would have no problems working with that doula as an L&D nurse.

The older L&D nurse, OTOH, I thought was patronizing and obnoxious.
