My sister was given the name Nis'ku. Pronounced nish-ka. It's a Cree Indian name. It was so strange that even the kids growing up never teased her!

Here is the Snopes information about some of the names discussed in this thread. You might find this interesting, I know I did!

As for unusual names that I have heard there have been many but I have forgotten most. When I was in college I had an art teacher who had named all of her kids after trees. I only remember Elm and Ash, there were two more but memory fails me.
We had a baby born at our hospital named Coltraine Radio (I forget what his last name was...do you remember Betsy?)
My mother in law's name was Beulah...we used to tease her and tell her that we were going to name one of our children after her! We didn't...
Lately the names of our babies haven't been that unusual but the spellings have been way out there! I find I have to ask the spelling of even simple names like John before I write it on the crib card!

The nursing homes of today are full of Ruths, Lillians, Dorothys and the like.
I imagine in 70 years, they'll be full of Brandons, Britneys, Dakotas, Morgans, Caitlyns, etc.

As for the more unsual names, I once met a lady named Pansy Chick, and a man named Precious Dahl. My mother went to school with Nugget Stone and Pearl Ruby diamond.

I've been around long enough to have quite a collection. Some of them: I knew a girl in college named Maida Steele. A patient's niece was a Rose Redd. A baby several years ago in NICU named Dusty Rhodes. An elderly lady named Sweetie Mae. Most recently were some interesting ones in a pediatric practice: Allah, Jihad, Sangria, Miracle. My favorite? Cupcake. All these are from my personal experience- no urban legends here.
