Low Census - Is it Happening to You

  1. Just wondering...have the number of deliveries decreased on your units over the past month. We usually do about 3500 deliveries per year at my hospital and our numbers have been way down, at least 30-40%. We're being cancelled all the time. I haven't worked a full week since the beginning of March. Our practices are projecting things to pick up mid-May. Just wanted to know if this was happening all over or is just specific to South Carolina.

We are down but there are some nurses who have moved to different positions in the hospital or moved out of town and we haven't rehired those positions-hasn't impacted us much because of this.

perhaps another indictor that the economy is not in the state of recovery the government would like to lead us to believe.

Yes, just that. People cannot afford it. Much less infertility cash. I have heard this census down stuff from friends as well.

Just heard on the radio this morning that only 46% of US citizens are employed currently.

That is way off. It's more than 80%. These links will say 9% unemployment rate, but it is more like 18%. Don't believe anything you hear on the radio.

In my province, thanks to our collective agreement, we can't get cancelled. If they hire us full time then they have to pay us (and we work) full time! They can either give is time off (at our own choosing) or float is to another unit to help out, but they cannot cancel us.

So Trenia, you are suggesting that 80% of US citizens are unemployed.

Nope, never been cancelled on my unit in the last 2.5 years I've been there. I've only been floated twice as well.

Our postpartum usually have low census 99% of the time on weekends. But it's always been that way. Less inductions and scheduled c-section on the weekends. And we are not a good size hospital. Not the biggest but serves about 5 different counties.

No our census isn't down at all. We are so full all the time. Our neuro ICU patients are always being overflowed to SICU or MICU.
