Hyperemesis Help Me!

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Morning everyone,

Second preg I am at about 8-9 weeks. Have had the last 3 weeks off work. Cannot stop vomiting!! Any tips you have seen that may help!! I am taking diclectin (which is also known as bendectin which was taken off the US market some time ago...I am in Canada...anyways it is vit B6 and an antihistamine....taking up to 6/day). Sometimes I throw it up. But generally even if it stays down i do nothing but hover over the side of my couch day and night trying not to wretch. I cant take this insanity!!!!!:o

I have also heard that burnt toast, as gross as it sounds, helps - something to do with the carbon or something . . . peppermint is also supposed to help with nausea. If it has been more than 3 days, def call your healthcare provider.

Did they happen to check your thyroid function?????

My SIL lost 23 pounds in the first half of her pregnancy but was never diagnosed with HG because she never became dehydrated.

Shortly after the birth, she developed gallstones (they are so common in her family that I suggested prophylactic cholecystectomies  ) and had her gallbladder removed. Pregnancy #2 was MUCH easier, and we all believe now that it was 10% morning sickness and 90% gallbladder disease.

jmho

We in the pharmacy have noticed that a lot of the HG patients are morbidly obese. Has anyone else made this observation themselves?

Hmmm...I've never read anything on the connection of Hyperemesis and obesity. I'm overwt/ obese, but wasn't with the first 2 pregnancies. I guess it could be realted to the increase in hormones related to the wt?

First pregnancy I had HG and took phnergan and the occasional IV fluids.

2nd and third were not that bad. This one I've been taking Zofran aka the wonder drug. $$$$ as all heck, but as some PP mentioned worth every penny. BTW....I always loose about 20 or so lbs in the first few months...not the type of diet I want to be on. :(

Advice anyone else reading this.....there are plenty of meds out there that are safe and your doc can prescribe....Talk to him/her if the non med tx are not working....do not suffer thru it alone.

that's wonderful Zofran worked for you. unfornately it did absolutely nothing for me. heard Phenergan was a great topical product, but my doctor refuses to prescribe it. Stated there were claims and lawsuits pending against the company because it causes seizures. i don't know what else to do im at my wits end here. just want to feel normal again.

This thread is over 5 years old. We cant provide medical advice. The only suggestion we make is to contact your provider. Thanks.

Staff note: I feel for all of you who had to deal with HG. As a postpartum nurse, I have heard some real horror stories and recognize that, while the general public may trivialize "morning sickness" and find it a somewhat humorous (not to mention cliched) byproduct of pregnancy, it can be the source of genuine suffering.

I would ask that from this post forward there be no more mention of specific medications. Many women with HG will need some kind of pharmaceutical assistance to have anything close to a normal life, but individuals should discuss this with their care providers. What works for one might not be suitable for another, and that should be determined by someone who knows the patient's history.

Please, limit further posts to encouragement and non-medical information. Thanks.

Again, I am extremely empathetic. I had little actual emesis but tons of nausea with baby #5 until well into my seventh month. The oldest of my four other kids was eight. All I wanted to do was be horizontal so the room would stop spinning. Not a good recipe for a tranquil home and family.

I hope all who are currently experiencing this malady will get through it quickly and have an amazing child to show for it.
