Puerto Rico school feedback - thread #2

Wow after 9 years and 1336 posts they closed our thread because it was too long.

The original thread and all the helpful posts can be found here:

https://allnurses.com/international-nursing/puerto-rico-school-28678.html

There are 134 pages in that thread but the last 130 pages were from 2010 and beyond and there is a ton of helpful info in there. Hopefully the current students will continue this thread as I graduate this month. Please try to read that thread at least a little bit before posting your questions here as it is very likely your question has been asked and answered on the other thread more than once.

Good luck on whatever path you choose!

When I was speaking with someone at LaInter through email he told me that you can just copy and paste into a word document the course descriptions along with the amount of credits each class is from your school's website.

Also I'm going to Puerto Rico this Sunday so I will be visiting the school. If anyone has questions about anything that hasn't been answered feel free to post them on here and I will make sure to find out while I'm there :)

Thanks edibie.

I am bringing transcript, ID, birth cert, and SS Card, plus course descriptions when I go. Are you bringing more with you when you go on Sunday?

Enjoy your visit..

I'm also bringing a copy of my health records to show proof of my Hep B series in case they tell me that I need to get a health certificate from the doctors while I'm there. If that is the case while I'm there I will have to test for TB and get a VDRL blood test to get the certificate. (Atleast that's what previous students have said) I know that the health certificate that is needed is only accepted from a doctor in PR.

I applied last month for the August semester but I haven't heard back from them yet :(

Hello, I also applied and I am still waiting to get a response. I called today and finally after several weeks of trying to get hold of admission office someone answered. However, they told me that my transcripts were received on 2/18/13.. I can't still believe it, because I mailed them on 01/18/13 from California.. Gee that took a while. Also, they provided me with my student ID and said that all my papers are under review by the nursing office and is just matter or waiting.

Now, is anyone planning in working while in Puerto Rico.?

wow I can't believe you actually got through to admissions on the phone. I've been calling this past week and noone ever answers. Finally today a lady answered when I was transferred to the nursing department but she couldn't tell me anything. I just wanted to know if they ever received the transcript that my university sent them. It was sent on 2/18/13 also and I'm in Fl so they should've gotten it by now.

Anyways, to answer your question, yes, I plan to look for a job while I'm there but I doubt I will find one because I don't speak spanish.

Yes, it's crazy getting to speak with someone. It kind of made me think twice if Inter will be the best option. I was looking into UMET and they answer the phone right away and they also start classes in August. I am considering in applying in both schools and whichever school approves me first than will be the one I will be attending.

Good luck to us and perhaps, we might see each other at nursing school!!

Did you go to the school? How was it?

No I'm not in Puerto Rico yet. I'm going on Sunday so I will be at the school first thing Monday morning. Do you speak spanish? I heard that the nursing program at UMET isn't completely in english (but I'm not 100% sure) or else I would've applied there too. But I'll let you know if they're better with assisting in person than over the phone when I get there.

Have a safe trip and let me know how did it go in the school and the pro and cons you might see!

There are pros and cons with both schools. I had a friend that started at UMET and ended up leaving. SHe started in Jan of last year and was really the only accelerated student so they kept canceling her classes because of enrollment. I think if you start in August there are usually about 8 or more people and they will not cancel classes for that number. She did have to take classes like microbiology in Spanish. I don't think there is anyone in that program at UMET that doesn't speak a least a little SPanish.

They take only two classes at a time because they are 8 weeks long. They are called bimesters. AT La Inter they are 12 weeks and called trimesters but in the STates we call 12 week sessions quarters. So my friend at UMET had the same teacher for both of her classes. And she really didn't like the teacher. So that kind of sucked. And the teacher had also taught at La Inter.

Anyway I don't want to knock it because what I know comes from her and she was not happy but I know there is a poster here that is very happy with UMET but she also does speak Spanish. The class sizes are small and they have brand new equipment. La Inter equipment in the labs is a joke.

And there are so many people that classes would never be cancelled at La Inter instead they would add another section. THis is not a good thing because it means scrambling to find a teacher and usually no class for a week or so until they find one. Get used to this. It happens. it would NEVER happen in the states but it happens in PR.

I hear from my friends there that things are getting better and the quality of instruction is getting better. So that is good. But it will be a sloooow process.

Hi edibie,

How did it go for you today? Was it easy to find the school and the right people to talk to?

Were you able to get everything in that you needed to in one day?

Thanks

Also ChanelCinq - thank you for all your comments on this thread, they have been very helpful for me learning about this school..
