Hi all;

I am starting the RN program with excelsior college. I've been an LPN for 10yrs with tons of geriatric experience behind my belt. Curious to know whats the best first prereq to take. I was thinking A&P. Any comments? I have no previous credits under my hat because I went to a vocational school for my LPN, Which did not apply credits at that time 1996. So I must start from scratch.:coollook:

Thanx,

Tia

Id do some of the general pre-reqs too. Maybe a math or english comp. You are already an LPN so A&P isnt going as much of a challenge. There may also be classes you need or should have before you take some of the pre-reqs too, keep that in mind.

Excelsior college has no math to take. However, I would think one must know math prior to taking any nursing course. I thought A&P because in my opinion seems like one of the harder exams. In LPN school, I learned your basic A&P, I think this would be much more challenging. "I think":chuckle

A&P is doable. One thing though: If you're thinking about ever doing a BSN through another school, A&P and Micro may not transfer since they don't have the labs that are usually attached in a traditional school. If you are hoping to continue on after your ADN, it might be better to take those two at your local college.

I'm considering going with Excelsior too, let me know what you think of it!

thanks:)

I got my feet wet taking Nursing Concepts 1 which I thought was very doable. However, I'm now trying to muddle through A&P. I know I know...should also be doable. But A&P when I was in LPN school probably wasn't quite as in depth and it has been 18 years since I took it. Yes, I have basic knowledge but I have completely forgotten mitosis and mitochondria etc. I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment but I know I can do this. If you do decide to take A&P, take a look at the A&P stick on the pre-nursing thread. There are lots and lots of helpful links, including a link to an MSN group run by a former A&P professor.

Hang in there!

All of you LPN's taking A&P....don't feel bad about being an LPN and finding A&P challenging. Mitochondria and mitosis are not a part of the real world of nursing, and even RN's who go back for their BSN and have to take A&P again often find it difficult.

I tried to challenge the Excelsior A&P exam but found the material too broad and comprehensive, so I went through the regular A&P classes at a CC.

I'm glad that I did because I'm now in a BSN program and it requires labs for all of the science classes and many RN's had to go back and take A&P again with the labs.

I am getting my LPN license at NJ very soon and think to go for RN. Very interesting onlinine LPN to RN( associate degree) in Excelsiors college too. Wonder if it accredited at NJ since I am here.

Questions:

1. How many pre-requirements before enrollment?

2. How long to finish degree

3. Can I take RN exams of NJ BON right after graduation or need some other things/courses/requirements...?

4. How much to cost for all courses/books/others?

Thank you very much!!!

Microbiology is useful before A&P, you need to understand the principles of these before nursing classes. If you have no college experience, the distance learning could be a struggle at first. Perhaps you should consider taking a class or two at the local community college to see how you do! Psychology is fun, (that is why so many people get a degree in it but can never make any money), so maybe try something like that or English Comp, that can be overwhelming if you have no practice writing, to get in the practice of studying schedule and see if distance learning is for you!!! Good luck, plus your local community college has placement testing available to see where you fit in, and your learning style, these are all resources that can be a help when starting out, DONT RUSH.
