Hi Guys and Gals

I received my RN license from Florida last Tuesday the 24th of August.I held off applying for jobs until I received my license number from Florida BON. I have applied for 5 open positions in the Central Florida area, one I just forwarded my resume, 1 HBO2, 1 Psych/Mental Health, and 3 ED jobs. I just received an email from one of the hospitals that I did not meet their requirements:mad:

But I did get a phone call from a Magnet hospital wanting me to interview for the Psych/Mental Health Job tomorrow morning:yeah:Eeeehaw that was the position I was wanting most. So I'll break out the weed eater and loose the beard, go to howtotieatie.com and figure that one out and show up tomorrow morning looking all bright and shiny.

So just because you have your degree from EC does not exclude you from job openings.

I couldn't find a shade of lipstick that looked good with my skin color so the beard is growing back. It was touch and go for a few days when I had the 'I've been of a drinking binge for a week' look going.

I started at the hospital on Monday and this Monday I start on the unit, this past week I had to do hospital orientation. It was interesting, but again kind of strange. The hospital uses one kind of IV pump, everyone need to know how to use them... except psych. They are still using paper for charting, but in April they are switching over to computerized charting... except for psych. RNs wear white or black and any combination.. except for psych, we wear blue or white.

The hospital is a Magnet Hospital, and wow! you can really see the difference, LOW patient/nurse ratios, transport teams, IV teams, rapid response team, stroke team just about a team for everything. Mandatory lunch breaks and coffee breaks. NO mandatory overtime! 26 paid days off a year. $1500 a year tuition assistance from the first day after probation. All in all it seems as if it's going to be a great place to work.

Once I get working on the unit, I'll let y'all know more on the unit conditions, but I am very sure it's going to be fun.

UPDATE!!!!!

Hey! I have almost three weeks on the unit and love it. Changing over to night shift has been a bit hard, but I am adjusting my sleeping OK. I got my first full paycheck last nigh and am pleasantly surprised, I had an idea what it would be but it always looks better as a deposit slip.

The patients are great, it really is amazing how much good a smile. hand shake or a pat on the back will do. Some can be a bit difficult, but most are fun to be with. The other night I had a conversion that went something like this... It's time for be... I can't lay down on the bed because the bed is reproducing my female body parts.... I don't see any extra female body parts..... well I know it is... No it can't be, the female body part reproducing machine is broken and the parts are on back order, I'll go ahead and smooth the sheets for you.... OK... Go to bed.... OK. It's great.

The other morning I was driving home from my shift a realized two things about Psych.

1. For the past 15 years I have been taking my vacations in various places in the country going prospecting for gold, the only difference between dealing with gold prospectors and my patients is the location.

2. If a person does not respond well to their meds, they try and place them into a truck driver training school:jester:just kidding.

Oh, since I accepted this job I have received a couple of real interesting emails from different hospital HRs. The first was from a hospital Med/surg job I had no real interest in, they sent me an email telling me my application was rejected... but if I clicked on the link there were other jobs I was qualified for( in Tampa/St Pete) Then, I sent my resume in for a HBO2 job, I never heard from them, not that it really mattered, I wanted the job I got, so any way I got an email from that hospital telling me that my resume was reviewed and I qualified for a position in OR and would I please apply. So yes guys hospitals do hire EC graduates.

Later

Steve
