unpaid speeding ticket = suspendended drivers license = nursing over??? please help!!

Nurses Criminal

Hi everyone, thank you in advance for your help and time!

Okay, so here's the story. I got a speeding ticket in february. I forgot to pay this speeding ticket, which resulted in my drivers license being suspended. I then moved to a different city and didn't officially change my address on my drivers license, so I wasn't getting the notices reminding me to pay, etc (my fault, I know). So then, I get pulled over for "driving left of center" when the cop informs me that my license was suspended for this unpaid speeding ticket. The police officer then impounds my car, handcuffs me, puts me in the back of the cop car, takes me to the police station where my pictures are taken and I am fingerprinted. Then I called my parents, who came and got me and paid 100.00 dollars bond money.

I paid the speeding ticket and license reinstatement fee the very next morning. I confirmed with the secretary of state that my license was reinstated, and officially changed my address. I sent a letter via certified mail to the prosecutor explaining the situation and apologizing for my actions.

I had an appearance date, where I pled "not guilty" to the driving while license suspended charge.

I then went to pretrial, where I met with a substitute prosecutor, who did two things. He dismissed the "driving left of center" civil infraction. He also reduced the "driving under suspended license charge" to "driving without license on person" charge. I accepted that.

What concerns me? The "Driving without license on person" charge is also a misdemeanor. the prosecutor said it was a traffic misdemeanor, which meant that it would NOT show up on my criminal background check, but would show up on my driving record.

I am confused. Does this mean that I do not have to report it? I want to become a nurse. Nursing schools run criminal background checks, they don't run your driving record. So would I be obligated to report this? Or no?

How bad is this? Please help! I have NOTHING else on my record (criminal) or on my driving record, just other speeding tickets and a ticket for having my high beam on....nothing else.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. If i am NOT obligated to report this to nursing schools, I would be so thankful.

i would report it when you go thru the licensing process. which means you;ll be delayed getting your license while they review your situation. but you wont be denied.

i am in this exact situation. i have a driving on a sus lic conviction. when i graduated, i ntfd my state BON that i had a record. i am in the review period right now. or will be whenever my CORI comes back. it will only delay your licensure, not prevent it. relax. go to school, and when you graduate, your teachers will let you know exactly what you need to do.

You will have to explain this to your state board of nursing, but don't sweat it. I had almost the exact same thing happen to me--unpaid speeding ticket, suspended license, pulled over again and arrested. Except I was on my way to work as a LPN. I had ONE loose Darvocet (my husband's) in my wallet, and 6 loose rx pills for dizziness (Meclizine). Three months after I thought this issue was resolved, the state police showed up at the nursing home where I worked at 4:30am (where I had just started working, my FIRST night off orientation, and the ONLY nurse in the facility) and arrested me for possession of ONE Darvocet and 6 'dizzy' pills that are available in the same strength over-the-counter. (2 Felonies). They arrested me in a multi-county 'pre-dawn drug roundup'. Threw me in jail with a bunch of crack heads and cocaine dealers and meth dealers. What a load of crap! All about my county meeting certain quotas or facing loosing their drug task force funding. Unfreaking believable to say the least. When they couldn't get me on the Darvocet (possession of a narcotoc) the prosecutor went absolutely BALLISTIC, proclaiming I would never work as a nurse again when she got thru with me. The judge said I had to be held to a higher standard & sent me to jail for 6 weeks, and home detention after that & probation after that. I wanted to DIE. They ruined my life. I wanted nothing to do with being a nurse for years after that. They really crushed me, I was a mess for a long time after that. Not to mention, my son was 14 at the time, and he really really really fears and hates cops, the first time he was pulled over, he threw up all over the officer! Anyway, eventually I GOT STRONG! I am a good person & an excellent nurse. Screw them! I just recently had my license reinstated and am looking for a job. I start back to nursing school to earn my RN in a week. You be strong! You will do fine, just be honest when disclosing your problem with the law, people will respect your honesty. Don't waste years of your life, like I did.
