New Grad relocation and job search

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi all,

I am an LPN soon to be graduating with my RN in May 2016. I am also moving states and getting married in May. I'm looking for advice regarding what everyone would recommend as far as my licensure goes. Both states are in the nursing compacture which will hopefully help. My dilemma is deciding if the process will be easier to just wait until I move and take the NCLEX there, or to take the NCLEX in my home state and then apply for permanent licensure in my new state. I also have to take into consideration my name will be changing and I'm not sure how long that whole process will take either. Any experienced advice would be welcome, thanks in advance!

NCLEX is a national test, so it doesn't matter which state you take it in- what matters is which state you apply for licensure in. You can take NCLEX in NY but have applied for licensure in HI. If you have no intention of working in your current state, it would, quite honestly, be a waste of money to pay for licensure in your current state and then turn around and pay for endorsement to your future state. Timing of the NCLEX is going to be your personal preference.

As for name changes, many BONs state that they must be notified within X number of days after the name change occurs. Check with the state BON for the specifics.

I think OP should get it in states that use nursys. It is a pain if your primary state does not utilize nursesys if you ever decide to leave.

Take it from someone who got their first license in hawaii -_-
