Second interview/shadow experience Friday!

I haven't posted a whole lot, as I've been searching through the old posts and getting the lay of the land. I'm a new grad as of January and passed NCLEX RN in March.

I had an interview last week with HR in a hospital in which I did two clinical rotations. I had great experiences in my clinicals there, and this hospital has always been my first choice. The position is offered as part of a grad residency program on a step down unit. I'm thrilled at the prospect of working on this unit and for this manager in general, as she has an excellent reputation as a mentor.

I am comfortable in interviews (I'm almost 40 and I have much experience and thus confidence interviewing for a new position) but I have never had a shadow experience tied to a job before, as this will be my first nursing position. I would like to prepare as best I can for this experience. I have several questions prepared for the NM and have reviewed as best I can the different diagnoses/pathophysiology for the population this unit cares for. I will have my scrubs clean and pressed and ready to go that morning. How else should I prepare for this opportunity and what can I expect? Is it typical for a residency program to offer a shadow opportunity or should I be cautiously optimistic?

I have to say, I was a little excited that HR handed me information regarding pre-employment testing and insurance at my last interview, but I also realize that with the pool of applicants this residency receives, it may simply be a protocol. Any words of wisdom are welcomed.

Any suggestions? I plan to ask about nurse to pt ratio, what the nurse I shadow values most about the unit...any other questions or tips? I've never shadowed for an interview.

Check out their patient satisfaction scores. See where they are low and ask how they are remedying it. See where they are high and ask how they achieve this. This shows you researched their hospital and care about patients. Interview shadowing would be so stressful!!! Good luck

Thank you for your reply. It was somewhat nerve-wracking in the anticipation of it, but I felt really comfortable on the floor and in the interview. Cutting to the chase....they called this evening and offered me the position through the residency program!!! I'm alternating between shock and awe. :)
