    Your status is still the same. The policy states the above and then goes on to state that licenses cannot be issued to people who do not have a legal status to work (not in so many words). What CABON has been doing all these years as a courtesy to international nurses was to help them take NCLEX and have proof of passing so that they could get an employer to petition them for immigration.

    CABON (for many reasons) has stopped extending that courtesy.

    My target state is california that's why it's disheartening to know about the changes. Taking the exam from another country is not possible since I submitted my requirements to the board of nursing in California since I'm not eligible to take the exam without a ssn which means I can't proceed to the next step from scheduling an exam with pearsonvue. Sorry if I sounded like a brat but I honestly feel frustrated with how things are turning out. But ur absolutely right I need to rethink things and maybe this happened coz I'm not meant to work in California. Just need to widen my options andmove forward.

    OK then what you need to do is apply to another STATE and then when you get an SSN endorse to CA.

    It's not the end of the world; just have to change and adapt.

    just want to share this with you guys ^^ As of April 26, 2010, the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) no longer accepts applications that do not contain a valid U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). The California Nursing Practice Act provides for a unified examination and licensing application. Once an applicant passes the examination, a license is automatically issued. Under these circumstances, the BRN cannot accept applications for the examination and licensure, without a valid U.S. Social Security Number.
    Prior to April 26, 2010, once an applicant passed the NCLEX-RN examination, the applicant was allowed a three-year time period to submit a valid SSN. After that time period had elapsed, the file was considered abandoned and the file was destroyed. Additionally, an applicant was also allowed to request an extension on the file Abandonment Date. This was done as a courtesy to the applicant. As of April 26, 2010, the BRN will no longer grant an extension on the file abandonment date.
    An applicant, who has passed the NCLEX-RN exam and is affected by file abandonment and file destruction, still has the following options:
    · Once the valid U.S. Social Security Number is obtained, the applicant may re-apply to the BRN. The applicant will not have to retest, because even though the file is abandoned and destroyed, the NCLEX-RN test result is still valid. You do need to submit a new Application Fee Schedule for Examination; a transcript and the fingerprint card. When the Board receives all the requirements (a new application; transcript from school; the fingerprint clearance and a valid U.S. SSN) we needed; the CA RN license will be issued.
    · An applicant may request that the California NCLEX-RN test result (NCLEX-RN CANDIDATE REPORT with your picture) be provided to any U.S. jurisdiction; if the applicant wishes to apply to a jurisdiction that does not require the SSN for licensure (There is a $10 fee that must be included with a test result (NCLEX-RN CANDIDATE REPORT with your picture) request). The applicant must contact other U.S. jurisdictions to inquire as to each jurisdiction’s licensure requirements. For a list of U.S. jurisdictions, please visit the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) official Web site at: https://www.ncsbn.org/index.htm and access the contact information under Boards of Nursing.
    · To assist an applicant who is requesting a VisaScreen® certificate from the International Commission on Healthcare Professions (ICHP), the BRN will certify the applicant’s California NCLEX-RN test results (there is a $60 fee that must be included with the certification request). Information related to the VisaScreen® certificate requirements may be found on the International Commission on Healthcare Professions official Web site at: http://www.cgfns.org/sections/programs/vs/

    Hushdawg and fellow nurses i found this article in multiple blog sites and was hoping if this is genuine information. Especially the statement saying if you already passed the nclex-rn before the said date and the 3year provisional period already expired, that you DONT have to RETAKE nclex-rn all over again.

    i tried looking for the original post or even at CA-BON, but seems like it was copied from multiple blogs.     ---- Gerick

    There are some factual pieces of information there.

    One of which being that you do not have to retake NCLEX. Once you pass NCLEX then you are an NCLEX passer for life.

    The other thing is that you cannot apply for ANYTHING with CA-BRN without an SSN.

    Beyond that is conjecture. Yes, this method may work; however it is preferable to maintain an active license in case you do not meet qualifications for re-activation in the future.

    If your end goal is to CA then this method may work for you, however if your end goal is to another state then you would be better off endorsing to that state before your time runs out to have your CA file active.

    hi! i already sent my reapplication for the nclex in cali but they posted a memo about requiring SSN for the applicants. will my reapplication be rejected? what happens to my file then? can i apply to another state with my file still pending in cali?

    Now this is a good development. At least foreign nurses have something that will prevent them from falling victim to the 'long wait.

    im sorry to tell but i think you may be able to take the nclex test but they will not isssue a license since you do not have a SSN. You should wait til you get a result from cali before you apply to another state. Good luck to you.

    thanks! but when i called the CA BON, they told me to apply to another state since i cannot provide SSN for reapplication. how can I apply for the CES for other states?

    Each state has guidelines for the CES report that they need and multiple options of different organizations which they will accept a Credential Evaluation from.
    Some of the information may be available on the website, some of it may require calling the BON.

    Alternately there are specialized centers which can help you if you run into a dead end.
