Relocating to Canada

Hello all,

I am an ICU (CCU/MICU) nurse with 10years experience in facilities ranging from small community, to large teaching hospitals in the US. I am getting a divorce and just want to get a fresh start somewhere. I love Toronto and alberta...can anyone give me advice on what the process to get there would be? Any recommendations on hospitals...what Canada's healthcare system is like...pay range...where to live :)

There are stickies to look at that outline wages in different parts of the country.

The government of Canada website outlines how to move here.

The job markets in both area you mentioned are lousy. New grads are unemployed, working nurses are underemployed, and there are layoffs in Alberta.

We have universal healthcare here and the majority of nurses are unionized. Things which seem to be loathed by many posters in the general discussion forum.

I've just looked at your posting history.

Australia, NZ, UK, & Canada. All English speaking and all with some form of universal healthcare.

When you get divorced, it is a time to make some changes in your life but not really the time to move far from home. You need the support of family and friends. You need familiar things around you.

Why not take some time off and travel?

I work in a hospital in Ontario, Canada. Most hospitals here are under the Ontario Nurses Association union. A nurse at top of pay scale makes about $44.00/hour. Of course there are shift premiums, can't remember exactly what they are at the moment. I believe they would look at your years of experience and put you at top of scale. Toronto is a quite expensive for housing. I don't want to divulge too much about my locale so if you want to PM me I will do my best to get back to you. I can tell you that experienced ICU nurses are in demand.

To work up here you would need to apply for a nursing license in the province in which you want to work. If you meet their requirements you will be given permission to write the CRNE.If you pass you will be granted a license. Coming from the US you could apply for a TN visa.I believe you need a job offer before you can apply for the visa so that will be the difficult part.

Fiona59-thanks for your support/concern :). I have some really good friends in Toronto so that's why I'm looking at there. I did do travel nursing in us for 4 years...just want to see the world now!
