NP preceptor Edmonton Area

I'm taking my NP through Athabasca University and they apparently expect students to submit preceptor names for clinical placement. I received my BScN in Nova Scotia and don't have a large frame of reference to pull from for preceptors. Does anyone have suggestions as to how to find a doc or NP willing to preceptor a student without knowing someone who knows someone?

Can't PM you as your membership is too new.

Look at where NPs work. Hint: medicine units at RAH, Capital Care, inner city health units.

I've been trying that. I'm finding it difficult to find names. The preceptor submission form requests the facility but also the name of the preceptor you wish to learn from. I'm finding it impossible

Sorry, not going to name names on the net.

Suggest that you call the unit and ask to speak to one, offer to meet them. Some of the NPs at BMHC are very approachable

To make it more difficult, if they work for AHS I can't contact them directly. This is impossible

Like Fiona said, try calling places where NPs work. I work in the medicine program at the RAH, and I see NPs all the time. Try calling the medicine units...or there's gotta be a liaison person responsible for arranging clinically for nursing students. Maybe try that?

There are NPs and then there are NPs. Without knowing which stream you're following that's a difficult question to answer. I personally know several NPs, all in pediatrics, so I'm no help to you. Sorry.

Thanks for trying. I'm just finding it extremely frustrating. I'm going to start my clinical in general adult but will need women's, peds, and geriatric eventually. I figure once I find my first preceptor I will most likely have an easier time finding the others. The clinical coordinator was no help but I figure I can't be the only student who has had issue in the past. I've got a few calls out to doctor's offices. If I can't find a preceptor in the next few weeks I'll contact the program director. Thanks again

This is one of the reasons that the NP program through Athabasca is not as highly regarded by employers.

As others have said, call some of the medicine units. Ask for the names of some of the nurse educators and then email them directly. The educators will be able to provide you with a few contact names.

You'll need to be resourceful, but your search isn't impossible. How are other students finding preceptors?
