If he thinks there are problems, why isn't there a whistleblower hotline number for staff displayed in the various facilities?

The floor workers know where the waste is but have no way of dealing with it.

In my mind...I'm glad the board was dismissed! It won't solve the current cut-back issues...but honestly, How can they justify these kinds of bonuses when there are nursing lay-offs, unit closures, seniors health and community programs being dissolved!! It's a disgrace and totally repugnant!!!

I came back from Libya two weeks ago...hoping to step back into my position ( I took a humanitarian LOA) and was basically told " Too bad!! So sad!! The unit is closing on June 28th" - Brilliant!!

Now waiting to hear about the bumping game!!!

I don't "like" the fact that you are facing "displacement" as the current AHS terminology goes.

It's not a pretty time no matter what some misguided souls think, it's going to get uglier before it gets better.

I hope to hades, there isn't going to be severance packages for those jokers! I mean we just get told "goodbye, start bumping!"

Article says there are no provisions for severance packages.

What the article says and what they will do are two different things.

I gave up trusting/believing anything the government of this province says a long time ago. It might not be called a severance package but I'm betting there is a golden parachute clause in their employment contracts.

Firing the Big Ol' Board will likely have NO effect on the disbursement of the "pay-at-risk" bonuses... the people fired aren't the people who were getting the cash. And they have a contract that says they will receive that money. If the government forces AHS to break their contract, they could very well feel justified in breaking ALL the contracts they've entered into as AHS. We should all feel very afraid. As for the minister-appointed board members, they were paid an honorarium to sit on the AHS board, and have no severance. Having said that, Minister Horne couldn't very well just look the other way when the board openly defied his thinly-veiled edict to trash the bonuses. The optics of that move on the same day they laid off 23 RNs and 4 LPNs from the two largest hospitals in Edmonton are right up there with the Great Cookie Caper of 2010. In as much as the government likes to pretend they aren't directly running the health care system, we all know they are. This proves it.

Oh and... AHS reported a $100 million operating surplus for the preceding fiscal year. The minister ordered the board to hold back releasing that information.

I'm curious about how "at-risk" the bonuses really are. I mean, AHS fell short by basically every metric they measured. OCP all the time, no decrease in LOS for subacute, deep cuts to disabled care. Not sure how they justified to themselves that they earned their "at-risk" pay.

Thanking Jeebus every day that I'm no longer relying on AHS to pay my bills...

The layoffs and cutbacks will continue regardless, but they deserved to be fired IMO. Fred Horne should resign, since he is no better than the rest of them.

However, the political climate is more or less the same across the country in terms of cutbacks and layoffs. In ON, a friend informed me that the facility she works at is closing one-two units. Those nurses have been warned that many of them will be laid off so all the hires with 5 years or less are concerned. Come fall, they will be unemployed and there are few jobs throughout the Province.

No one is safe. It's unfortunate since an aging population should result in more funding for health care, not less. Aside from those laid off, the nurses left to deal with increased patient loads will burn out faster, and what about the people on the receiving end of this care? On so many levels this is just terrible.

What a disaster. I feel stressed just reading this. It makes me sick that these fools think they should be getting bonuses while others are losing their jobs and seniors care is suffering greatly. With all of these transition units shutting down what do they think is happening to the elderly that we are kicking out the door?? I work on a transition unit and I love it, but seeing how every other transition unit around is closing beds or their doors completely, I felt I had no choice but to transfer to an acute unit. I am passionate about caring for seniors but unfortunately the government no longer sees the need to care for the elderly and would rather spend money on big bonuses.

I totally agree. No love for the AHS board but the government's hypocrisy on this issue is laughable.
