Cali new grad RN

Aloha.. hello to all!

Well the Nclex is over and I finally got my HI license number ( going through endorsement to CA license now).

Does anyone have a list or can point me in the right direction in regards to new grad programs here?

I am obviously applying to nursing homes and for tech jobs as well but I am not from here and I know literally 2 people here so I am hoping to get a bit of advice what hospitals I should be looking at.

I have looked at Scripps and their program is closed for winter. Sharp has nothing posted. Palomar has nothing posted. I even looked as far as going north of SD. The road is open as long as I am somewhere in So cal.

Tri city doesn't have new grad programs. UCSD is off limits from what I understand they prefer local students only.

Any advice with dates would be helpful!

Not sure who you're referring to lol but I went to school in Socal and since May I've only had two interviews at one hospital here. I started looking out of state a month ago and I've gotten far more interviews.

Did you interview already for other states? Have you applied to a lot of new grad programs?

I am sure there are more opportunities in other less desirable states but San Diego is already way too cold for me so my other option, if I don't land an RN position here, is to move to the gulf somewhere warmer.

I am training as an LVN right now ( next week actually) at a nursing facility.

Yeah I interviewed for some new grad programs on the upper east coast, way way way more colder than SD unfortunately haha

No, I have two jobs here. It helped that I came to Southern CA with some experience and specialty certification under my belt, so I was able to land the first job fairly quickly. The second job came after I completed the BSN.

Just warning everyone how fast these new grad postings can get taken down, based on what I've seen with my facilities' own new grad programs. Especially since internal applicants often get to see--and apply to--the position before the public does, so there's already lots of applicants in the queue before you even get to see the posting.

You could apply to positions in TX if you want warmth. Houston and San Antonio have great hospitals. Once you get a year or two of experience, you'll have a better chance of getting jobs in Cali. Socal is rough, rough, rough. My classmates from school who went back to Socal aren't working in hospitals...some are in retail. Another one is moving across the country to take a job.

In Florida, many areas are saturated (like Miami, Orlando and Tampa), but if you look around, you may be able to find something.

Good luck, and do keep in mind what others have stated about Socal ... tons of apps for new grad programs with few positions. On average ... around 1000 apps for 10-20 positions.

Keep applying, that's all you can do. And I have to agree with others--look outside of CA for that experience. I can't tell you where is the best place for new grads as that seems to change frequently (used to be ND, now it's TX but who knows for how long). If you insist on looking in CA, consider the less desirable areas inland and in Imperial county along the CA/Mexico border (forget San Diego county even near the border. I can see Mexico from the window at one of my jobs, and this facility has no shortage of applicants).

I have an offer ( started training) for an LVN position at a nursing facility so I decided to go with it and apply to warm states including everywhere in Cali. Give it a bit of time and see who responds and what happens.

I did get some calls from indeed.com ( posted resume there) to work in correction facility but they wanted a year experience.

Good luck with that a class of 31 new BSN/RN graduated in April last year and 1 has a job in a hospital

And thats just one program all of the school have the same issue with JOBS for new grads I ended up teaching LVNs because they arent hiring new grads

stay positive and work hard. I'm happy to work as an LVN right now! Majority of my graduating class are working as RNs or CNAs nation wide. I don't think luck has anything to do with it. ;)

To OP:

So much focus on getting into a new grad program. Your currently working as an LVN but aside from applying for hospital new grad programs have you also applied for non-hospital RN positions?

I personally never been in a new grad program before. My first job was in a SNF on their sub-acute floor, then went to corrections, then to the ER. No new grad program.

When I was a new grad having problems finding a job i was told to work as an LVN until I could eventually secure an RN Spot.. To me that's a mistake. Any RN experience will contribute to you reaching your goals, but not so much LVN experience.
