I finished my MSN (Ed) a year and a half ago, and have continued to work as a staff RN ever since. (No Staff Development jobs available in my rather large institution).

Yesterday, the Staff Educator for my unit submitted her resignation. I am applying as soon as the position is posted- and feel I have a good chance. This would be my DREAM job. I am so excited!

Specializes in retired LTC.

I'd apply even without the posting - just explain that you heard about it and are strongly interested. Good luck!

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

amen to amoLucia. Sometimes the noisy wheel is the one that gets oiled first. Practice telling how YOU are the best choice for the job. Include things you learned in school they may not know about, such as how to develop curriculum; budget for training, books, personnel; how to assist MD's and others in finding evidence based data; how to assist is writing policies that always have evidence-based references; how to manage data so that it is compliant with OSHA/JC requirements---some people think of staff development as people who only teach CPR or arrange for in-services. I make sure I am part of important committees so I will know what is going on and have rapport with the CNO and Risk Manager so if trends are noticed, I can provide appropriate training. The point is, how can you make them money or save them money??

When it rains, it pours! :)

I applied for a Clinical Instructor job with almost eight months ago. Even spoke with the program director about it, but nothing ever happened. Yesterday, I get an email from them - completely out of the blue- can I be ready to start NEXT WEEK?

Holy canoli!

Specializes in Outpatient/Clinic, ClinDoc.

Wow congrats MMJ! Are you going to be a course mentor or an actual cohort instructor for the prelicensure peeps?

Update:

I completed the online training for the Clinical Instructor () position over the weekend, and STARTED yesterday! It's very, very exciting, because clinicals start for the Role Transition/ Capstone students on Monday- at a BRAND NEW HOSPITAL BUILDING. How new, you ask? They are moving the patients in tomorrow! (Wishard/ Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis)

AND the Staff Educator position posted today- my application/ resume' is already submitted. I spent a lot of time tweaking the resume'- and after I printed it out I realized that I'm a pretty good candidate!

I cannot tell you how exciting this is for me. Even if I don't get the Educator position - I'm just livin' the dream these days! :)

Well, the educator job was 'given' to the assistant manager- who has never, EVER expressed an interest in staff development. I am so hurt by this. I'll get over it, but it's gonna take a while. :(
