To the 'Negative Nurses'

I have recently applied to nursing school- and I am very excited.

I come here once in awhile to see what 'real' nurses do, etc. Do you know how disheartening it is to read all of these negative comments? I don't care who you are, or what you do- there will ALWAYS be things about your job that are miserable!

I worked as a preschool teacher with special needs children for 3 years. I loved and hated my job all at the same time. I was constantly cleaning up poo, getting hit, kicked, dealing with huge tantrums, thrown up on, etc. But I also helped a little girl learn to walk at the age of 4. I taught an autistic boy sign language. I helped a little girl with cerebral palsy to learn how to grab on to her toys and get to hold them.

I look at nursing the same way. If there are some of you out there that 'hate' your jobs so much, why are you doing them??

Have you ever been in a hospital for surgery? Needed care by the nurses and relied on them to help you? How did you feel towards them?

Personally, I have always been extremely grateful to my nurses. Sure, my doctor came in once a day or so to see how I was doing- but it was my nurse that helped me get into the shower and get cleaned up. My nurse who brought me pain meds when I was in tears. My nurse who held my hand and let me cry on her shoulder after my son was born and I was terrified of going home to take care of him on my own.

Those people did so much for me. I will never forget it. That is why I want to go into this profession- not for recognition, not for money.. simply to do for at least one other person what was done for me!

It makes me so sad to hear how many nurses hate their jobs. I know after you have been working awhile it is sometimes hard to remember what you like about the job, especially if lately there have been problems.

I guess what I am trying to say is, if you all just thought for a few minutes about what you are truly doing, all the good you are doing, to help people who need your professionalism and love then maybe you can see why you should be proud of what you do.

No one out there has a job they can honestly say is perfect.. but not everybody is in the position that nurses are where they can be sure they are doing all they can for someone who needs them.

People can do nasty things when they aren't feeling well- they can be rude and horrible- even if normally they aren't like that. But you are there to do all you can to help. That is what this job is. No matter what other crap gets in the way.

Hugs to you all- you are all amazing people and I can't wait to join you all someday. You should be so, so proud of what you do. I promise each and every one of you that there is someone out there who thinks of you and all you did for them- and appreciates you for it.

You will also find awesome stories of nurses who absolutely love their jobs. Mostly people come here to 'vent' or get something off their chest which is understandable.

I invite you to search the site a bit more in depth and you will find heartwarming stories. :)

Please remeber that this is a NURSE bulletin board. We come here to vent, commiserate, and support each other. You may see some negative posts here about how any of us may feel about our jobs on a given day, on the next day you may see a complete 180 by the same nurse.

You are correct, no job is perfect. Nursing is a high pressure, life and death profession. No, we don't have complete license on this description, but it still describes what we do. We who use this board find it helpful sometimes to find out that our experiences are not isolated, seek advice from others, or just get a little encouragement. It helps us keep doing what we are doing.

Please don't misunderstand- I, in no way, meant this negatively.

I know everyone needs to vent- I just want everyone to remember too, that even when they are the most miserable- someone out there truly appreciates them. I am sorry that it didn't come across that way. :o

I believe most of the negativity you read on any nursing BB relates more to these nurses being discouraged that they are not ABLE to be MORE of what you describe at the end of your post.

It is a matter of wanting more OPPORTUNITY to be the very best nurse they can possibly be.

Nurses want nothing more than to be able to give their all, to make someone's day... to spend real quality time with their patients, to do more real educating.. to do all those things we visualize in our heads as we head out on this journey.

Someday, you will spend time in their shoes.. the ones of those who vent here, and you will understand. And you will have YOUR days here as well.. to just go AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHH !!! :banghead: :no: :banghead:

It is NOT because we do not love what we do. It is because we want to do MORE of what we know we SHOULD be doing...COULD be doing.. if given the proper staffing ratios, and a caring administration.. one that cares about it's PATIENTS' wellbeing, and not merely that of their OWN. ( $$ kaching!)

The rosy glasse WILL come off sooner or later, my friend. But that's ok... then it will be up to you to make the most of the situations you find yourself in, and why you will come here to seek advice, understanding, and encouragement.

Wish you the best, and hang on to that positive outlook just as long as you can ! :)

:balloons: cherry...hello and welcome to allnurses! :icon_hug: i wish you well in your success in becoming a nurse one day. we are here for you from beginning to end...we support one another, encourage one another, pray for one another, laugh with one another, cry with one another, joke around with one another, and sometimes we act like typical siblings and have our petty disagreements. but one thing is above all this....we understand humankind better than most people do because as nurses, humankind is our business...up close and personal. no one is going to attack you here for sharing what you shared from your heart. we, who are already nurses, know full well the excitement of just beginning in our careers. just because we are "experienced nurses" now doesn't mean we no longer care about our patient population. afterall, at one time or another, all of us are some nurse's patient. thank you for the boost you gave nurses in your post regarding how valuable we are to someone we care for regardless of how many "ugly personalities" we also care for each time we are caring for our patients. once a nurse, always a nurse...even after we are no longer physically working as a nurse. one day, prayerfully, you'll understand more about the "other side" of being an experienced nurse. we know where you are coming from because we all started out where you are beginning in your career once upon a time. so, keep your bright outlook on what is taking you into nursing. sounds like you're going to make many patients happy as their nurse one day. :present1: :santa1:
