IT girl considering a career in Nursing, HELP ?'s

Hi all, I'm so happy I found this place. I have so many questions. First I'm 23 and in IT I have been there for wow 4 years already. I have experienced layoffs and outsourcing.. This seems to happen every 2 years because here we go again. For awhile now I'm been highly considering a new career due to the fact IT and business I'm really sure I don't want to sit in a cubicle for 8 hours a day anymore. Oh it gets so old. I have many friends and a loving boyfriend in the medical field (med school/nursing/emts). And it just seems something that I would be really good at and love since I am a "caregiver" and "nurture" to everyone. That is my personality. OK so here is my dilemma. I've gotten into IT thru a technical school training and only have an associates degree. Some of my credits did transfer to the school I'm going to now. (Univeristy of Phoenix Online). But I do not have any bio or chem and have one sociology calss done . I need some suggestions of what I need pre-requiste wise prior to entering into the nursing program. Any suggestions? I thought about doing my bachelors degree in business and then taking some night classes to accomplish my pre-requisites. And then take two years off of work and go back and finish up my nursing degree. Any help would be appreciated. and since most of my friends took the typical way and went thru a four year university they don't know how to help. Also, do they offer nursing programs at night at all?? I'm not sure if this is even feasible but worth a shot to ask? Please help if you can..

One of the roads that you might consider is becoming and LPN/LVN depending unpon what state that you are in. It will give you an opportunity to get your feet wet first before you have committed a large chunk of your life. If you find that you like nursing then you can go on to become an RN. Don't forget your IT training because if you really like nursing you can go into Informatics.

I'd hit your local Community College and talk with their nursing advisor. He/She will be a wealth of information on what is required in their college for pre-reqs and can advise you on other schools (for example 4 year universities with bachelor of science in nursing programs) close to you that you might be interested in as well. While all colleges have similar requirements (ie: anatomy and physiology) they do all differ somewhat on other pre-reqs. Just to apply to two different schools in my area I had to take several classes that one wanted, but the other didn't and vice versa.. It all depends on the schools you're interested in.

I am in IT also and after 20 years tired of the insecurity and outsourceing. I start nursing school this October and am really looking forward to it. Take all the pre reqs and go for it.

I have been in IT for over 20 years, even though my first degree is in biology. During the last 3 years, I have had over 6 jobs and lay offs. I will start nursing school in Sept. You don't need a degree to start nursing school. As far as the pre-reqs, whether you go for ADN (Associate) or BSN (Bachelor) most of the pre-reqs will be the same. You will need to look at a couple of schools' course requirement for nursing and it will outline the pre-reqs for you.

Most of the time, the pre-reqs are Anatomy & Physiology I & II w/ Lab, Human Development, Chemistry, English, Math, some requires Nutrition, Ethics, Statistics, Speech, Computer Science. For the most part, check out the schools you are interested in.

I was in IT, too, 20+ years. My degree is a B.S. in Microbiology.

I started in the RN program this past Spring. :) I LOVE it.
