Considering a change

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello,

i have been an RN on a med/surg floor for three and a half years. I earned my BSN in December of 2013 and plan on starting on my MSN this fall. I am interesting in trying something other than bedside nursing before I finish my MSN but I am not sure what else is out there. I feel that unfortunately i am already getting burnt out on bedside nursing. I am starting to really dislike my job and have heard from other employees and friends at other facilities that it is the same everywhere in my area as far as hospital nursing goes. I could really use some advice.

Try something like home health or hospice if either of those interest you. Even though it is bedside nursing it is so completely different. You could also take a travel job in corrections, now that is really different and can be a lot of fun!

What is your focus area for your MSN? I certainly hope that you aren't doing a generic (e.g., "clinical leader") degree, because that really isn't worth much, career-wise. If you have determined your area of focus, it makes sense to try to move into that area because when it comes time to trot out that shiny new MSN & get a job, you'll need some relevant experience in addition to the degree.

Best of luck to you.

What do you mean the MSN in clinical leadership isn't worth much?
