A Major reason for Hiring freeze

most businesses don't know the cost of obamacare.

there are over 1,100 "to be determined by the secretary" in the bill.

until small business understands and knows, what those "to be determined" are thy are not hiring.

Obama care, once it goes into full effect, will cause an increase in hiring health care personnel. People will finally be able to have access to health care, causing an increase in surgery and health care related procedures. As for me, I will finally be able to have insurance, and will be able to get my torn meniscus in my knee fixed! :yeah:

While we are at it, Obama should be blamed for the BP oil spill, the increase in earthquake tremors in California and the outcome of the World Cup! Oh-and Obama was responsible too, for the tsunami in 2004.

it is really funny when people listen to some talk show hosts who make millions of dollars a year and have the best insurance you can imagine spew lies and they eat it all up. FYI at the end of the day, they are ALL in the same boat. republican, democrat, liberal, conservative whatever - all the same. So, how about we skip the political crap because we don't get paid for it and focus on developing ourselves and our families.

The hiring freeze around here started before Obama was even elected to office. It's only been in the last year (since the announcement of his healthcare plan) that the freeze has let up to hire experienced nurses. Many hospitals are even starting to shell out the money to hire and train new grads.

I think the freezes all had to do with the economy and cyclic trends in nursing.

Hmmm, that is funny. My hospital has been on a hiring freeze since October of 2007. Well before Obama was elected and the health care bill passed.

Exactly! that's when this all started. And some of us BSN, RN's who graduated 2008 are STILL having a heck of a time finding a job that will train us. Hence, we settle for jobs that "do not count" towards experience in the RN workplace. And the longer we remain working in these places, the worse it looks for us.

Obamacare is a Major reason. Guess who foots the bill for the "insurance for everybody"? Employers. This includes the mom and pop shops.

Before the new health care bill, the American people have been paying for the uninsured and we still will. Whom do you think pays for these people now. Why do you think health care costs are so high? Do you have any clue to how much it cost to treat a person with a stroke or kidney disease because he or she could not afford blood pressure medication? Or is it that you do not care. Too bad if you can not afford to go to the hospital, right! Health care is only for those who have money- is that what you are saying???

Anytime someone resorts to name calling and making judgments about people they do not know, I shut down because it is a cowardly way to avoid an honest discourse.

Hmmm....in MI all the Detroit area hospital went on freezes in 2008. Obama wasn't even elected yet....of course our economy tank in 2008 (again, prior to his election) too. I'd say blaming everything on the new health care bill is oversimplification at best.

My healthcare system started putting the brakes on in 2002 with closure of 1 hospital, 3 yrs later, closed OB services at 2 hospitals, then 2 TCU SNF. In 2004, a 60+yo hospital changed from acute care to LTAC + SNF --SNF closed and LTAC sold last yr. Last OB unit closed this yr.

From 2002 - 2008, eight Philadelphia area hospitals closed: Mercy Community, Parkview, Elkins Park, MCP, , Warminister,St Agnes, Graduate, Episcopal (changed to psych) --- all prior to Obama's election.

In 2009, Temple East/Northeastern closed, changed to urgent care/outpatient center.

We are just seeing evolution of healthcare: due to advent of laser/minimally invasive surgery, and non-invasive testing, care shifting from inpatient to outpatient settings. Those deemed worthy of hospitalization, are in for intensive care type services at least in Philly area. Thusly, hiring greatly curtailed for inpatient servies while outpt care increases with less professional staff needed.

I posted this somewhere else, but if you really want to find out why Nursing is the way it is right now, read "American Nursing and the Failed Dream" by June M. Harrington. Nursing is the largest Health Care Profession in the US but cannot use it to their advantage because we are all not connected, and because education has been educating and putting out a generic nurse (new grads, Associate and esp BSN) who need way more clinical training to become proficient in becoming a staff nurse. Book has great information, easy read.
