A Major reason for Hiring freeze

most businesses don't know the cost of obamacare.

there are over 1,100 "to be determined by the secretary" in the bill.

until small business understands and knows, what those "to be determined" are thy are not hiring.

I heard this earlier today either on cnbc or fox news. They had the head of the SBA on.

I agree that there are a lot of unknowns. We really don't know how this is going to work out in the long run. I suspect there will be a larger need for NPs and PAs with the increase in visits. We really need another hospital in this area. Two closed in the last ten years and it has created a big problem. Most hospitals are probably taking a wait and see approach and trying to do with the bare minimum.

Oh, I thought the hiring freeze had to do mostly with the economy that tanked through the fiasco with the lending companies --Sallie and Freddi Mae and Wall Street come to mind, and the housing bubble which burst big time. Small businesses haven't been hiring for a couple of years now.

Obamacare is a Major reason. Guess who foots the bill for the "insurance for everybody"? Employers. This includes the mom and pop shops.

I think that is big part of it also...and the start of it. But I think even as the economy picks up, the uncertainty of Obama care will require hospitals to play it safe.

A sad reality is that the full impact of the cost of Obamacare may not be realized for a long time. 2014 at the earliest and the "to be determined" parts could take longer. I'm guessing Hospitals will only hire as the employees quit or retire.

Hmmm, that is funny. My hospital has been on a hiring freeze since October of 2007. Well before Obama was elected and the health care bill passed.

Hahahahaha! Gotta laugh. Anytime some jerk starts yammering about "Obamacare" I shut down. They're partisan, and narrow, and totally disinterested in an honest discourse about healthcare in America. Hopefully people will realize this, and stop trying to engage this person.

My hospital hasn't hired anyone for three years. I can't remember--who exactly was running the country when this freeze began? The good news is that my unit has finally opened up some positions THIS WEEK. Should I credit "Obamacare?"

OP, surely you have been around long enough to know that there are "crises" like this every few years.

Right now elective surgeries are down at all of the hospitals where I live (midwest) because people anticipate paying smaller copays once the new healthcare stuff gets sorted out. The EXACT same thing happens prior to every election, every time a new tax is passed, and every summer. And every December, we are swamped because everyone wants to have their procedure factored into last year's deductible.

The same cycles play out in hiring.

It's happened before, it'll happen again. Everyone go on home. Nothing to see here.

With 30 some million patients entering the system we will see an explosion of hiring. (Add in an improving economy and we will see a resumption of elective surgeries that will drive an increase of provider numbers...)
